As some of you may already know (thanks to the 'Last DVD you bought' thread), I recently re-watched Shallow Grave and thought it rocked; but is it Boyle's best? Well, it doesn't beat 28 Days Later in my books: I know many people hate it as violating 'zombie rules' and all (or just pretending to be a zombie movie), but for me it was an exhilarating journey, and it still is one of my favourite horror movies. Really.

Trainspotting for me. That baby...oh God that baby...
I saw it because some critics were comparing Requiem for a Dream to it, I could never guess why since those two movies were completley and totally different.

How come this isn't in the Favorite Directors section?
My vote: 28 DAYS LATER

How come this isn't in the Favorite Directors section? It now is. It's an old thread, from back when we didn't have Favourite Directors section - we only had Cult Directors and I didn't think Boyle could be called that. But he sure was - and is - damn good!

Yeah. Look at the date. It's from April 2004. That's funny.
Oh, and just watched 28 Days Later... and it was pretty good. Personally, I prefer slow-moving zombies to these fast things, but whatever.

Trainspotting for me 100%
Fantastic film IMO. Love it.
28 Days Later? Eh. It's Romero lite. Great haunting scene in the beginning with the empty London streets but the film isn't particularly original as it progresses. In fact, I thought it was a bit boring!

A question now: who saw Shallow Grave and what did you think of it?

I liked Shallow Grave, clever and funny {in a dark way}. Trainspotting is a classic and one of the defining films of the 90s,I still find that crawling baby scene horrifying. But I think 28 Days Later is his best, one of those films that may be fantasy but almost looks and feels plausible. As for changing the rules of zombie movies, well,my view is "so what"?.
Enjoyed The Beach quite a bit until I read the book, which is FAR better. A straight adaptation of the book could have resulted in a superb film. Life Less Ordinary just annoyed me,I don't know why, since I usually like wierd and wacky films.
Boyle's films are always worth a watch though,I think he's one of the few directors today who uses pop music well in his films. Millions looks like a real change of pace but I'll see it.

28 Days Later
But my choice was easy since I've only seen Trainspotting besides it.
I... I didn't really need to see Ewan McGregor's lightsaber... if you know what I mean.

I feel a bit torn having to choose. Although Trainspotting wins overall, 28 Days Later was a really engaging, atmospheric, thinking man's horror film. Shallow Grave remains my favourite low-budget thriller (and I'm a big fan of Memento), and all the charcaters are just so well-rounded, yet pretty despicable. The less said about The Beach the better - if Boyle had stuck to the book and cast McGregor instead of DiCaprio (as expected), it would have been fine. I'm not sure if I should see Millions or not; Danny Boyle and Kid's Movie don't really go together in my book.

I went with Trainspotting because it effected me so much. Also because it was the truest film to show the kinda of Scotland that isnt seen all that often. Unbelieveably believable performances took it a step further. Its one of the rare times, a book is done prefect justice. Scenes were changed, added removed, etc as its always the case but the tone of the film is absolutely perfect.
That said, Shallow Grave is excellent, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I thought The Beach was underrated and I really enjoyed that (but agree the book is awesome, don't know why some of the changes were made!!!), ALLO is a lot of fun and is again, underrtaed IMO.
Finally 28 days later is awesome too. Don't agree with the slow zombies comment though, I think the way the infected ran was really scary... Hearing the footsteps or seeing the shadows in the tunnel. I cant feel any sort of terror with slow zombies that I could moonwalk around and slap their ass at my convenience.
Millions, I didnt really dig. But whatever.
Sunshine looks like its gonna rock though.
