Frankly, this is one I thought would be right for this time of year. I want to know what the board thinks of this.
Every year, TBS (or some years TNT) will start a marathon of A Christmas Story at 5:00 PM Pacific Time on December 24th and will run it through for an entire day until the last one ends at 5:00 Pacific Time on December 25th. I get a little tired of this, as I've had to sit through it a couple times at parties where we would catch it at least twice during that run, and while it's a holiday classic, there's a limit to the fact that this is done every year. Do you feel that way as well, that maybe showing it a couple times during that block would be enough?
Or do you feel that, no matter what others think, it should be run for 24 hours consecutive for others out there? What do you think?

I don't think ANY movie should be run 24 hours a day. If you're that big a fan of a specific movie can't you just go buy it on dvd and watch it at your own leisure? On top of that, I've never gotten the mass appeal of that particular movie. I've seen it a couple of times. It's okay, but a 24 hour marathon is beyond overkill.

I've never even sat down and watched it all the way through even once. Caught bits & pieces (my sis-in-law loves it), but didn't keep my interest for very long.

Wow, I was expecting to get flamed for this feeling. I agree with you, Heiney. If you like it enough to see it that often in a particular time frame, save the money and get the DVD. It'll be less expensive in the long run and would save you the option of leaving it alone for other traditions on Christmas Eve.

I don't have a problem with it. I was annoyed that my wife fell asleep twice trying to watch it making me have to go through parts of it again, but eh. It's only on one channel, and it's not like it's preempting tons of ultra-great shows. So you can't watch Family Guy on TBS for one day. Watch it on Fox or something. Big whoop.
But, it's a holiday tradition now, and it should remain such. It's a good movie to have on in the background when opening presents with family, especially little kids. I'm not a huge fan of it or anything, but it doesn't bother me in the least. It's a tradition now, just like the Twilight Zone marathons on Independance Day and New Years. I look forward to those, especially the upcoming New Years marathon. My wife is working and I have my son, so it's not like I was going to go out and party it up anyway. Might as well enjoy a classic, traditional, holiday good time.
My wife was really looking forward to the Christmas Story marathon. She thought she'd missed it. We forgot it happened on Christmas Eve.

The difference between a marathon of A CHRISTMAS STORY and a TWILIGHT ZONE marathon on the Sci-Fi Channel is that at least with TZ, it's not the same episode run over and over again. ;D
In all honesty, it doesn't necessarily bother me that CHRISTMAS STORY is run for 24 hours, I just don't bother watching it. I guess it's more a matter of, I don't get it. A 24 hour marathon of a bunch of different X-mas movies makes more sense to me, but whatever, to each his own.

Honestly, who's watching a Christmas movie ON Christmas? It's for the season, leading up to Christmas. Not on the day of. Most people have their TV's off. And if the Tv is on, sports are probably what's playing.

That's true. We had a bunch of friends and family over on Christmas and had Christmas music playing in the background and the tv wasn't even touched.

I think Heiney nailed my feelings on this one exactly. You don't spend 24 hours watching the same thing over and over again. Are the ratings really that good for one of the viewings at 3:00 in the morning that it really nescessitates the showing of the same film so many times over such a period of time. It's the main point I was upset over, that a marathon shouldn't have to be the same thing over and over and that different but similar exceptions can be brought in without losing the intent of the choice.

Well, I know this sentiment is late but I don't particularly mind the 24 hour marathon. Considering I don't really even turn on that channel because most of it is nothing but syndicated crap, it's probably the only time of year they actually get people to tune in. I have to admit I watched some of it on Xmas eve when I was wrapping presents. It was still cute and fun - I know the entire movie by heart at this point because I've seen it so many times. I say keep it. If you're really that upset you can't watch TBS's other fabulous shows on Xmas....get over it.

Ok, but the thing is, why show the one film, non-stop, for 24 hours every single year? Is the ratings that good to justify it being continued, as they're surely losing out on money that other programs can offer them.

24-hours of A Christmas Story is apparently not going to go anywhere anytime soon.
That's funny that after all this time it still manages high ratings--even over a 24-hour run.
