This is something I've wanted to ask the Board for a long time and only now remembered about asking it:
Does watching a movie dubbed make it less entertaining than watching it in it's original language with English subtitles?
What are your thoughts, I'd really like to know.

Once I became accepting of the idea of subtitles, I preferred them. Dubbing is for people too slow to read. And therefore, probably too slow to understand the film anyway.
I grew up watching foreign films, mostly Godzilla or stuff of that nature, that were dubbed--and it always took away from the overall quality of the film. I watched one just yesterday, Warning From Space, from 1956 Japan. It was dubbed, and ridiculous at that. Not as bad as some films, but still obnoxious. The fact that the film transfer was never cleaned up for the DVD also hurt it. But what should I expect of a DVD with 4 movies that only cost a buck at Wal-mart?
Subtitles > dubbing

The only time I'll allow the dubbed soundtrack is when I'm watching a Spaghetti Western... MAYBE an anime, depending on how good the voice acting is. Anything else, I want the original audio with subtitles.

I'm on the same page as Smitty.
I'll watch the Leone Westerns dubbed because they were shot without sound anyways and it's dubbed in EVERY language.
Then since the only animes I usually watch are Miyazaki's, and Disney almost always assembles a great cast for that (thank you John Lasseter), I really don't mind there either.
But come on, try watching "Throne of Blood" without the subtitles. Yeah, it's more annoying than intense.

Ichi the Killer was dubbed in English... by Dutch people. Imagine how horrible that was.
At least Ichi can still be watched with subtitles.

As it's my thread:
I believe that dubbing really doesn't hurt a movie. I'll take subtitled if it's availiable, but I liked dubbed as well.
Good call on the Leone Westerns, those are dubbed either way no matter if you watch it in Italian or German or English.
I guess now the question is, what is the difference between bad dubbing and good dubbing, for those that like the dubbing.

I was one of the "no comments" - I can put up with either one. Subtitles can be tough in a movie that has a lot of visuals that accompany the words. I remember getting lost in a recent foreign flick (the name of which i forgot). I read fast but I miss details easily if I'm reading those subtitles instead of focusing on what's going on at the same time.
I've seen some bad Jackie Chan movies with horrible dubbing though. It can be so exaggerated and silly! Like a cartoon.

Some films, I can tolerate the dubbing, but generally, these days, I go for the subtitles. Downfall would've been terrible dubbed.
But most anime is dubbed, and it doesn't hurt that stuff--unless the acting is just awful. So there's that, on the rare occasion when I watch anime, I don't mind the dubbing there.

I haven't seen enough anime to really now that. I've tried but can't get into them. It's the animation itself for me: that stuff gives me more nightmares than the horror filcks I watch. The dubbing does sound weird, I'll admit, but I wouldn't necessarily call it bad.

The characters are animated thusly: mouth opens, mouth closes, mouth opens, mouth closes. They can dub whatever sound in there they want to.
Devil Man rules.

I'm voting "yes", but it really does depend on the film. If I have a choice between subtitles and dubbing, I'll go for the subtitled version. But some of those old martial arts or Godzilla movies are hilarious with their bad dubbing. And has been pointed out, unless the acting is really bad, it doesn't bother me in the case of Anime. On the other hand, I wouldn't watch a dubbed version of a more serious film like Crouching Tiger... or a Kurosawa movie, for instance.

Ok, so no one has said what a bad dub job is? I'd still like to know.
