Like most modern movie watchers, Hollywood churning out so many remakes gets on my nerves, but every once in a while we get a jewel like Carpenter's THE THING or Cronenberg's THE FLY. And with Jackson's KING KONG about to debut, I was thinking about remakes in general. Rather than ask about all-time favorites I thought we could narrow it down to just last year.
Out of all the remakes we got in 2004, my favorite was, without question, DAWN OF THE DEAD. Honestly, I haven't seen most of these yet. I did see the two Denzel Washington remakes, liking MAN ON FIRE a little more than CANDIDATE. FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX was average. THE GRUDGE was too RING-like for my liking. TAXI was unwatchable. Literally. I had to turn it off.

Gotta go with the horror film of Dawn of the Dead. It's pointless seeing The Grudge after seeing Ju-On.

Alfie - alright Dawn Of The Dead - gripping! The Grudge - disappointing Man On Fire - good The Manchurian Candidate - so-so
Haven't seen the other ones but I guess no other film in the poll can possibly match the great Dawn Of The Dead remake.

Ditto on DOTD. I liked Walking Tall too...but you know, Rock was in it so that may have had a lot to do with it. ;D
Loved Man on Fire too...but I didnt' know it was a remake.

Yeah, there was a movie from the 80s called Man on Fire, it starred Scott Glen in the Denzel Washington role. Not that bad of a movie, but this one is a little better.

No wonder a lot of people are pissed at all them re-makes from hollywood. Not me, in fact half of that list, I didn't even know there was a previous release. Oh, I voted for Dawn, even though I havn't seen the original yet.

Alfie: Fun, great performance by Jude Law, just a little too long for its own good.
Around the World in 80 Days: Fun movie, not the Oscar-winning classic from the 50s, but don't take it too seriously and you should have a good time.
Dawn of the Dead: FUCKIN' AWESOME.
Flight of the Phoenix: Tolerable, somewhat watchable movie. I expected much less. Giovanni Ribisi was really good in it though.
The Grudge: Terrible. Unnecessary remake (by that, I mean it's the same damn movie in every respect except Sarah Michelle Gellar and Bill Pullman are in it), and the original wasn't that great to begin with.
The Ladykillers: Loved it. Tom Hanks was great, and Irma P. Hall was hillarious. Not as good as any of the other Coen Bros. movies, but still a classic in my book.
Man on Fire: This was a remake? I didn't know that. If so, my vote goes here. Denzel was great, Fanning was great, excellent story, original directorial style, what more can you ask for?
The Manchurian Candidate: A close second for me. When you think about it, the original Manchurian Candidate did not need a remake. Jonathan Demme was treading dangerous waters making this film, but he emerged without a scratch on him. That's a very hard thing to do. I loved this movie... but the original will always be the best.
The Stepford Wives: I am in the minority in thinking this, but this movie was funny as Hell.
Taxi: Never saw it. Not a big Jimmy Fallon fan.
Walking Tall: Hated it. Too PG-13, ran like an episode of Smackdown. Rock really should stick to comedies.

Oh, I voted for Dawn, even though I havn't seen the original yet. Yeah, that's a definite Movie Police infraction. Dawn of the Dead. Was anyone really surprised? No, but I guess I didn't expect such a landslide. Flight of the Phoenix: Tolerable, somewhat watchable movie. I expected much less. Giovanni Ribisi was really good in it though. He did play an interesting character. The best thing about the movie, imho.

Rock really should stick to comedies. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is in negotiations to star in "Daddy's Girl," a family comedy being developed at Walt Disney Pictures. Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard penned the screenplay, while Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray are producing. The story will follow a football player who learns that he has a daughter and embarks on his own journey in becoming a father. ;D
