Good guesses guys, but all wrong.
A couple of hints: 1. Not quite as legendary as the guesses so far. 2. He's the lead singer of a band, not a solo artist.

Jean Simmons, the actress, or Gene Simmons of KISS? Sorry, both wrong. No other member of KISS either. Again, too legendary.

Yes and far too dead as well. Oops, there's another hint. The answer is someone who hasn't been around as long as everyone else who's been mentioned so far. I think his band first hit it big in the late eighties or early nineties. Ooh, and the hints just keep on comin'.

Chris Cornell?

Nope, not Robert Smith of The Cure or Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. Though in the original comic book version, Eric Draven does seem to favor a more Robert Smith-like hairstyle than he does in the film.
Another hint: The band this guy fronts are far from being an underground or alternative group. They were all over radio and had quite a few hits.
(I'm giving so many hints because I realize there are so many possible guesses, as we've witnessed so far.)

The lead singer of Radiohead That doofusey lead singer of Flock of Seagulls ? Not alternative like Radiohead and way bigger than Flock of Seagulls, who actually only had like two hits and hit their peak in the mid-eighties. Another hint: American band.

Nope.
Another hint: Not a hair metal band.
Ooh, I think we're getting down to the wire here. I'm getting the feeling this is going to turn out to be someone no one here expected.
