I don't think it was Indy because Spielberg and Lucas planned that one together from the get-go.
I can't think of the movie title yet though.

None of those.
Another hint?:
First hint: 80's release. Second hint: Not a horror movie. Third hint: Huge box office hit. Fourth hint: Not a sequel or part of a franchise.

Nope. You guys aren't thinking big enough. Look at the third hint again. Everything you named was a cult film not a box office hit.

Smitty got it. It was TOP GUN. Some of you may be a little young to remember this, but that flick was mega huge when it was released. Songs from the soundtrack were everywhere. Military recruiters set up booths outside the movie theaters showing it because young guys came out of the movie so pumped up that they would enlist on the spot. And it's the flick that made Tom Cruise a superstar. And yes, both Carpenter and Cronenberg turned down the chance to direct it, but not Tony Scott. Smitty's up.

I remember Top Gun--it's about the first movie I remember seeing in the theater. I was 7 or 8. My Dad's a retired Air Force Colonel, so he wanted to see it about a hundred times.
Current score:
Heineken Skywalker -- 7 Pulpmariachi -- 2 IamTheSmitty -- 2 frankenjohn -- 1 Termination -- 1 Livingdeadgirl -- 1 Bartwald -- 1 Quorthon -- 1
Smitty's up!!
