A question from me: some years ago a $50mil WWII project was being seriously considered starring Brad Pitt as a tailgunner stranded in Japan; the script had many eyebrows raised by being almost dialogue-free. It was all finally halted in early stages because filming in Japan appeared more expensive than expected. What famous name was supposed to be getting the directing credit there?

None of them.
This name you're trying to find is already a very popular one in the directing crowd, but is not really connected with successes of the blockbusting kind (like, for instance, that of Emmerich) - rather with cheaper, critically acclaimed movies. Oh and: up until now there's no war movie on the X's CV.
