Sorry if I forgot any good ones. Everybody loves polls, you know.
I went with Gladiator. God I love that film. Although, I love 13th Warrior and Braveheart almost as much.

My vote goes to Braveheart, followed closely by the Last Samurai

Braveheart wins my vote too. Love it!
I enjoyed Gladiator but being that I first watched it when I had just taken a Roman History class I guess the some of the inconsistent history bothered me at the time.

Though I haven't watched either in a while, I went with BRAVEHEART slightly over GLADIATOR. All those movies have some kick ass battle scenes though. Well, okay, haven't actually seen ALEXANDER. But really, could the battle scenes be that bad??

Havn't seen Last of the Mohicans, The 13th Warrior & Alexander. Gladiator is a great film, better than Troy, but not better than Braveheart imo.

Gladiator! Some people mistake it for a mere blockbuster but it's a truly magical film for me: the visuals, the acting, the script - all just great! History doesn't agree with the film, I know, but whenever I see something THAT good I stop caring.
Braveheart would come second - and it also violates history, doesn't it? Next would be Alexander - far from a perfect picture but rather involving nevertheless, and The 13th Warrior - a pretty good tongue-in-cheek adventure with Banderas in fine form.
The only one I didn't like in the poll is The Last Samurai - my, was I bored!

Wow, Bart. You liked the 13th Warrior and didn't like the Last Samurai... It's the opposite with me. I loved the Last Samurai, but couldn't stand the 13th Warrior.

The Last Samurai is a much more ambitious movie - that's for sure. But it bored me and I found it pretentious by the end. The 13th Warrior, on the other hand, is a shameless adventure flick - and in my opinion a very well done one for that. Ah, the movie taste - can be so shockingly different!

Ah, the movie taste - can be so shockingly different! 13th Warrior is actually based on a Michael Chriton book, "Eaters of the Dead." The book contains a notice in it that it's apparently based on actual historical accounts. The book Chriton published was quite good as I recall (and the reason I went to the film), he claimed it to be his "retelling of these ancient accounts." Wether true or not, I still loved the film--though the armor and weapons are highly inaccurate for the era. Believe it or not, the book actually has no ending. Claims the ancient accounts end around there and that Chriton decided against speculating to fill in the rest.

I have read Crichton's book after seeing - and liking - the movie; it's even better than it, in fact: reads almost like a Poe story (with the aforementioned "It's a true story" intro and all) and is packed with lots of dark humour. Great lack of ending, too!

Having just acquired Troy and The Last Samuri on DVD I suddenly got a hair up my ass to re-reflect upon these films, and realized that my "top epic warrior" film list needs modification...
Firstly, my favorite is Gladiator, hands down. Then, Braveheart, and 13th Warrior is now tied with The Last Samuri.
Watching Troy again showed me that Troy was a movie about big ambitious, impersonal battle after battle with personal vendettas spliced in for good measure. Well done, but somewhat shallow.
The Last Samuri I found I loved the deep, often emotional, story and characters even more than before. And the climactic final battle--hell, I was amazed, I list it as one of the best large-battles I've seen in a movie of this kind. Extremely fast action with swords, guns, bayonettes, cannons, and fire. Brilliantly coreographed, brutal, and bloody. The somewhat smaller and more personal battle far outweighed Troy's legions of CG soldiers--at least for me.
Yeah, that's right. I revived my old thread just for this. It was on my mind, dammit!
