I hated this flick. Yes, there were some good moments, even a few great moments, but aside from those I never forgot I was watching a film. It just seemed too too FAKE to me -- from Hanks' rendition of a moron to Sally Field playing his mother (gimme a break!). I even didn't like Robin Wright's portrayal of the love of his life. To me, the movie was as dumb as Gump himself. It annoyed me no end when I had to listen to people praising that movie endlessly!

Run Forrest, run!! From Michele! ;D
Okay, now. I like this movie. Loved it at first, but it has lost some of it's power over the years. But I still think it's a very good movie. Yes, it's preposterous, but I can suspend disbelief while I'm watching it. It is a fantasy after all. I think Hanks, Field, Sinise (Lt. Dan) & Williamson (Bubba) all gave great performances. Penn was okay, but she didn't do anything any other competent actress couldn't have done. The effects were very good for their time and I loved the blending of Hanks and archival footage. Especially the scene with Dick Cavett & John Lennon. Great soundtrack too. It shouldn't have won the Oscar for Best Picture over PULP FICTION though. I think the Academy & moviegoers just got caught up in the "feel goodness" of GUMP, but obviously, out of the two, PULP is the movie that has grown in popularity and influence over the years. While GUMP has been demoted to "just another movie". A good one, but not historical, IMHO.

I agree with Heineken: not as good as Pulp Fiction but still a fine piece of cinema. I had no problems getting into the plot and forgetting it's just a movie... you can read more of my praise towards the movie in What's your favourite Robert Zemeckis movie? thread, Michele.

Pulp Fiction DID deserve the win that year, but let's face it. This was 1994. I cannot name a better year for movies. Pulp Fiction. Clerks. Ed Wood. The Shawshank Redemption. Forrest Gump. The Lion King. Dumb & Dumber. The list goes on. The Academy couldn't see into the future, and couldn't see that Pulp Fiction would have a stronger lasting appeal. While I disagree with the decision, I cannot bring myself to argue with it.
Same concept with 2002. All 5 of those movies, if either one of them won the Oscar, I would not complain.
The Oscars that REALLY pissed me off, 2001. A Beautiful Mind was a nice movie, but in no way was it better than the Fellowship of the Ring. Even if they were saving the Oscar for Return of the King, I'd still give the Oscar to Moulin Rouge over A Beautiful Mind.

Back on subject, I have yet to see Forrest Gump. Sad but true.

WHAAAT??? Oh my God! Run Smitty run!! I think I hear the Movie Police comin' for your ass!! Remember what happened to Bart and the "TERMINATOR 2 INCIDENT"?? Jesus man, it's been available on DVD forever now! At least Bart has the excuse that he lives in a country where all movies aren't readily available. But you live in the good ole' U.S. of A.! Land of baseball, apple pie and a Blockbuster Video on every corner. This is an outrage I tell you! Here's this guy Smitty who is constantly posting on this message board. A MOVIE message board! Supplying us with his movie reviews and opinions. Telling us what is a "must see", blah, blah, blah, and trying to recommend the likes of RESIDENT EVIL 2 and GIGLI to us, and he hasn't even seen FORREST GUMP?? He's a fake and a fraud. Bow your head in shame, Smitty. Off to Movie Prison you go! And NO phone call! I love when people on these boards admit they haven't seen a film that pretty much everyone else in the world has seen. You just know I'm gonna go nuts. ;D Go rent it Smitty. Despite what Michele thinks of it, I think you'll probably like it.

I liked the movie, but was REALLY pissed off when it beat The Shawshank Redemption for the Oscar. Smitty, I'm almost at a lost for words.

It was a joke. I thought my little add-on down there at the bottom about me going nuts clarified that. If not, Smitty it was a joke.
