You knew about this, guys?
No you weren't dreaming, The Untouchables really is getting a sequel and the whole notion wasn't just part of some horrid LSD flashback caused by too much sugar on your Rice Krispies. We're sorry. Still, while you're here you might be interested (in a morbidly curious kind of way) to hear that the writing team behind Runaway Jury and Walking Tall have been given the go ahead to pen the project.
Titled The Untouchables: Capone Rising, this film will require David Levien and Brian Koppelman to dream up a story of a rather more youthful (and, we're guessing, considerably less portly) Capone, as he begins his ascent within the mafia. The film will also feature a young version of Sean Connery's Jimmy Malone, at a time when he was as bent as all the other coppers on the Chicago PD.
"The film starts on the eve of Capone's arrival, and while Malone wasn't the most corrupt cop, he operated at a time when every cop was on the take," Levien told Variety. "Once he crosses paths with Capone, he sees a level of violence and criminality that causes him to have a moral awakening."
"This period of Capone's life hasn't been done since the movies of the '40s and '50s," said Koppelman. "[They] said, 'feel free to come up with the most compelling, dark, violent and complicated guy you've ever seen'".
Quite clearly the whole thing hinges around the casting of big Al himself, though who'd want to have to compete with Robert De Niro's performance in the original is anyone's guess. Will Ferrell, you say? Could be. Could be...

I'd read that they were thinking about a sequel....but I hadn't heard any of the details. Although I guess this would be more like a prequel. This could be a great movie if it's handled well. I thought 'Runaway Jury' was good, so that gives me hope. There's nothing I hate worse than a bad mob movie... I wonder who'll they'll get to play Capone. Suggestions anyone? Surely to Goodddd they were being sarcastic when they made that Will Ferrell comment. Bwuh! William Forsythe was great as Capone in the Untouchables tv series, but it depends on how young he's gonna be in the movie. I think Andy Garcia would make a good Capone too.

I think Andy Garcia would make a good Capone too. That would be a little weird though, seeing as how Garcia played one of the good guys in the original THE UNTOUCHABLES. Hadn't heard anything about a sequel or a prequel. Hope they don't screw it up too bad, as I love the original Costner/De Niro movie. And if they do screw it up I can always deny it exists, like all the sequels to JAWS & THE HOWLING.

I wonder who'll they'll get to play Capone. Suggestions anyone? Whatever suggestions we may have the producers will still want Orlando Bloom, I'm afraid. And seriously now: I can't imagine any actor playing "young De Niro"; playing just "young Al Capone" would be a lot easier, if you know what I mean. The Untouchables is a movie difficult to prequelize, plain and simple.

True, but the kid who played his son in A BRONX TALE, definitely looked like he could be his son, therefore resembled De Niro.

Oh, yeah. But it was long ago. Who knows if he looks like De Niro now? I, for one, don't. What's the name of this chap anyway?

And besides the aint lookin for someone as said above to be a young DeNiro, so it doesnt need to look like him at all. As long as he can pull off being a young Capone.

Oh, yeah. But it was long ago. Who knows if he looks like De Niro now? I, for one, don't. What's the name of this chap anyway? His name was Lillo Brancato. And neptune's right, the actor doesn't neccesarily have to look like De Niro, as long as he can pull off Capone.

You're right about the looks, guys, but what I meant at the start was more like "being as powerful as De Niro in this role" would be difficult for the poor actor.

Ok Im probably gonna get slaughtered for this;
I wasnt that impressed with DeNiro's capone. Not that it was bad, but it wasnt a big enough role for him to make it his own so to speak. When he was on screen he did well, but to me, Capone was a cameo in that film, one that looked better than it was because it was Robert DeNiro playing him. If Bob Hoskins had got part as planned then no one would be talkin about this.
The point being, that the part wasnt that great for or by DeNiro but DeNiro being the man he is, stature wise, we respect it because we know the guy is a legend.
Again Im stressing he wasnt bad, just nothing special.

Yeah, I know, but they could pull a Tarantino & have the same guy play a different character. ;D "True, but the kid who played his son in A BRONX TALE, definitely looked like he could be his son, therefore resembled De Niro." I always thought the young version of "C" (Francis Capra) looked more like DeNiro than Lillo did. Don't hate me for saying this but I think Johnny Depp could pull off Capone. He has the look & the attitude & a pretty powerful on-screen presence.

I think Depp's a great actor, but just too much of a pretty boy for Capone. This would turn into that movie that was out in the late 80's, I think, that starred a bunch of good looking young guys as real life gangsters. Richard Grieco was one of 'em. What the hell was that movie called??

Mobsters? I'm not sure, I never saw it. Is it the one with Christian Slater as well?
Anyway, Depp could probably make it work but he would have to leave his looks in the dressing room. He can do that though - you guys have seen Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, I guess, and that's a good proof.

Yeah, I think it was called MOBSTERS! And I'm pretty sure Christian Slater was in it too. I remember the critics nicknamed it YOUNG TOMMYGUNS, after the Emilio Estevez western, YOUNG GUNS. You're right about Depp changing his look for FEAR & LOATHING..., but why can't they just hire an actor who isn't so, um, pretty, to begin with? I just can't picture Al Capone with those cheekbones.

Yes, it was Mobsters....one of my guilty pleasures. Pretty good for a fluff mob movie. And Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is an awesome movie.
