From Empire:
It’s a conundrum we’ve all had to face at one time or another: what do you do when the third instalment of your multi-million dollar espionage franchise is hamstrung at the last minute by an absentee director? While many of us would simply sit down and cry into a big tub of ice cream — or worse, give Renny Harlin a call — Tom Cruise understands that, when you’re up against the wall, you need to bring in a professional.
So it is that JJ Abrams, the creative genius behind slick spy series Alias, has been officially confirmed to replace Joe Carnahan as director of Mission: Impossible 3, rescuing the project from the mire it had become stuck in and putting the film back on track. Generally considered to be US television’s golden child since Joss Whedon made the move to movies with Serenity, Abrams is still a bold choice for the gig, having never directed a movie in his life.
That’s not to say we don’t think he’s up to it. True, his only notable movie experience so far is screenwriting credits for Armageddon, Road Kill and (ahem) Forever Young, but there’s no need to hold a grudge. Abrams has proven himself a dab hand at explosive action, having blown up Jennifer Garner more times than we care to count on the hit show, and given that Alias is just about the most exciting thing on television bar 24, we’re inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Not even Abrams’ talents can keep the project to its original start date though — which was er… this week — and the film will begin shooting in Berlin around this time next year, giving Cruise time to complete Spielberg’s War Of The Worlds in the interim. There, you see? This particular mission wasn’t nearly as impossible as we’d all come to believe.
Pity, in my opinion. I was hoping for a kinky installment with Joe at the helm.
