Anyone else do this? Apparently, you get 5 movies for 50 cents each, and then you are obligated to buy 5 DVDs at normal price in the course of 2 years. You can opt to choose a SIXTH DVD with the original 5 for $15, and then you'd only have to buy FOUR DVDs in two years. I just ordered Once Upon a Time in Mexico, X2, Scarface, Blade Runner, Reservoir Dogs, and Desperado (yes, as much as I love movies, my DVD collection is extremely crappy; I need to build on it). It's a nice way to force me to buy DVDs, that's for sure.
I don't know, just felt like sharing. I'm a bit excited about this. ;D

I've been a member of various mail order clubs like this over the years. Albums (remember them?), CDs, Laserdiscs (remember them?) and DVDs. The initial offer is great (Get a ton of our product for a penny!). It's with their "normal price" plus the high shipping & handling costs that they make all their money. The "normal prices" are always higher than what you can get in a retail store. So what you do is, fulfill your membership as quickly as possible and cancel your membership. Usually they'll try to convince you to stay in the club, so they'll offer you a bunch of discs for a really stupid low price (with the same stipulation as before, just buy so many discs within the next couple of years.) Buy those also, then proceed to fulfill your membership again and then cancel your membership again. They'll try to get you to stay, but be strong! Six months to a year later, you'll get a letter with yet another ridiculous offer to get a ton of discs for some "you just can't refuse" price. Sign up again, fulfill your membership and cancel yet again. It's a vicious circle, but the only way to stay ahead of their game. Lastly, whenever possible, in your initial offer pick up as many two-disc and higher end special editions as possible. These are normally a little higher in stores and as long as your getting them practically free you might as well pick the most expensive stuff. Good luck!

Thanks for the warning... I'm cancelling as soon as I pick the 4 DVDs I'm obligated to pick. Then I'm buying all my stuff at Discount DVD stores.

For an online retailer I recommend deepdiscountdvd.com They have great prices and shipping is free. Keep in mind that Free Shipping is sent via "media mail" which means it can sometimes take a little longer, but if you're in no big hurry to get your discs, it's the way to go. You can opt to pay for shipping and get your discs quicker though. I've always used the free shipping and usually get my discs within 10 days.

Yeah, one of my co-workers told me about that place. I'm sure to be going there more often after I'm finished with Columbia House.

They really rip you a new one w/ that shipping & handling crap! But that's w/ everything not just dvd's. It's ridiculous! Almost as bad as the damn gas prices nowadays.

Columbia House just started a new division called DV2. All DVD's are supposed to be 40% off with NO shipping and handling charges. I'll let you guys know in a few weeks if it's really worth it. I think they're trying to compete with DeepDiscountDVD.

For anyone who rents as many dvd's as I do, Netflix is really cool. You pay like $20 a month & you can watch all the movies you like. You make a list & they'll send like 2 or 3 at a time & you keep them as long as you want, then when you send them back they'll send you the next ones on your list. It usually takes about 3 days to get them when you send the others back. We did a trial membership & it worked out pretty well.
