I'm not asking about Open Range on purpose: haven't seen it still, want to pump up my interest in it with this poll. If you saw Open Range, however, do tell me what it is worth!
This poll was not as easy to prepare as you may think. It appears Kev made more than just five good movies! I can see people pissed off at Field Of Dreams not being here, or Silverado, or - why the hell not? - The Bodyguard... If your favourite movie was omitted - tell me about it. But vote in the poll, nevertheless - just choose the best one of the eight choices.
Mine is - unsurprisingly, if you know me - The Untouchables. NOT De Palma's best movie ever, but a VERY GOOD De Palma movie, all the same, one where Costner uses the precious help of De Niro and Connery to offer us a true acting feast!
A Perfect World and JFK are other two I liked a lot from the list. And please note: I DIDN'T like all eight of them; just tried to pick the 'most commonly loved ones'. Let's see if it worked.

DANCES WITH WOLVES all the way! This one's not just my favorite Costner film, but it's one of my all-time favorite films, period. I'm a sucker for "epics" and this one's got it all. A good story, acting, directing, cinematography, costumes, drama, humor, action. THE UNTOUCHABLES actually is my favorite De Palma movie. Sure it's pretty "normal" AKA "mainstream" compared to some of De Palma's other flicks (BODY DOUBLE, FEMME FATALE, DRESSED TO KILL), but that's one of the reasons why I like it. Some of those other De Palma movies are entertaining "trash", but they're not my favorite kinds of movies. The entire cast is great and Connery won a well deserved Oscar for supporting actor. FIELD OF DREAMS is a favorite that didn't make the poll. I can recommend OPEN RANGE more than the slightly overrated MASTER & COMMANDER, which I know you weren't thrilled with. This western got no love from the Academy Awards, mostly Duvall, who deserved a supporting actor Oscar nomination.

Now, that's a surprise, Heineken! I thought you may choose A Perfect World or maybe JFK but Dances? It's not bad, no, but for me it's miles away from those I've mentioned! To each his own, though - I keep repeating that... after all, Body Double is a better Brian De Palma film in my opinion than the mighty Untouchables, so...
I'm glad you liked Open Range, anyway. I'm starved of a good new western - and the presence of Robert Duvall only makes this more must-see than it already is!

Yup, I'm agreeing with Heineken (my favorite beer, by the way) and picking DANCES. I'm a sucker for costumes and scenery and this one had both! I also like to see when actors and film makers take the time to research and authenticate things like languages, etc. in their movies and DANCES did a fantastic job with the language and customs of the Native Americans.

DANCES did a fantastic job with the language and customs of the Native Americans. Yes, I agree with that. It always sucks when Germans talk English to each other, or the Chinese or the Native Americans or whoever else who uses a totally different language in real life. That's true: it's one of the things for which we should admire Dances or Crouching Tiger or - oh yes - The Passion Of The Christ. What bothers me though is... who's so shy on these boards to vote for Dances as Kev's best and not have a say about it?

Went with the good old "Untouchables"...DePalma always made better thrillers than horror films.
"JFK" is very good, with the court room finale being truly wonderful cinema.
Good watches are : "Silverado" "A Perfect World"...Not seen any of the others except for "Robin Hood" and that was crap.

Same three choices as mine, 42nd! Silverado, however, disappointed me a bit... wasn't bad, no, but all those actors and a director I then adored - I expected even more from those guys. ...we still don't know who was the third person to vote for Dances

Yes, Open Range IS really good. Robert Duvall's performance was excellent, I'm surprised he didn't get an Oscar nomination for it.
But yeah, I have to vote for Dances With Wolves too. I like Civil War dramas.

I voted for the Untouchables, but I love gangster movies so... My second choice would be Dances With Wolves for all the reasons Sybill already stated & I also love civil war era movies as well. Oh, and I also liked Robin Hood just for the fun of it! One of my guilty pleasures!

****BUMP!****
Maybe some people who joined The Board later would like to vote? Hmm? Hmm? ;D
(Don't be afraid to check out the archives from time to time folks and revive some of these old threads. There's a lot of good stuff from "the early days".)

Have to go with Dances With Wolves - Director's Cut. Its a long film 4+ hours, but the DC really adds to the story & presentation. I first thought that the extra minutes might bore me to death, well I enjoyed it more & felt it could have even been longer. Yes Heineken, I agree there are threads worth re-visiting in the archives. When I get around to it, I'll bump them all up.
