From BloodyDisgusting.com:
Resurrections and Remakes:
Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to re-launch Freddy Krueger, the iconic psycho who haunts the subconscious dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.
The trio will create a new franchise based on "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the 1984 Wes Craven film.
Originally played by Robert Englund, Krueger haunted nine films and two TV series, and was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."
The deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready for an April start for "Friday the 13th," a New Line re-launch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. Marcus Nispel will direct a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift ("Freddy Vs. Jason").
Both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, something that Platinum Dunes provided in the Nispel-directed "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." New Line won't hire a writer on "Nightmare" until the writer's strike ends.
Platinum Dunes is busy. At Rogue Pictures, the producers are prepping an untitled David Goyer-directed exorcism thriller which has "Cloverfield" star Odette Yustman set to star, and a "Near Dark" remake that will be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," with Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.
I'm interested to see what they'll do with Near Dark...
For Barker Fans:
Between the Hellraiser remake, Midnight Meat Train, and the special edition of Nightbreed, it's a good time to be a fan of Clive Barker movies (OK I made that 3rd one up, but let's just pray someday it's a reality). Anyway, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Clive Barker is going to produce the first in what is hoped to be an ongoing series based on his legendary Books of Blood.
Matador Pictures and Barker's Midnight Picture Show shingle are teaming to adapt what is planned to be the first in a series of films based on the horror author/filmmaker's fiction collection "Books of Blood."
John Harrison ("Tales From the Darkside: The Movie") will direct from a script written by Harrison and Darin Silverman. Sophie Ward ("Young Sherlock Holmes") and Jonas Armstrong (the U.K.'s TV series "Robin Hood") are set to star.
Blood" will adapt the first story from Book 1, which centers on a paranormal expert who, while investigating a gruesome slaying, finds a house that is at the intersection of "highways" transporting the souls in the afterlife.
Barker, whose written works have inspired such film franchises as "Hellraiser" and "Candyman," will produce with Midnight Picture Show's Jorge Saralegui and Joe Daley. Matador Pictures' Nigel Thomas and Lauri Apelian and Micky Macpherson of Edinburgh-based Plum Films also are producing.
Barker is in development on a new "Hellraiser" movie, while "Midnight Meat Train," which is based on his short story, is due in the spring from Lionsgate.
Yay!
Argento News:
Mitropoulos Films will help Myraid Pictures distribute Dario Argento's The Mother of Tears (review), which will arrive in theaters June 6 in its full NC-17 form. The film centers on a young American art student, Sarah, who "unwittingly opens an ancient urn that unleashes the demonic power of the world's most powerful witch. As a scourge of suicides plague the city and witches from all over the world converge on Rome to pay homage, Sarah must use all her own psychic powers to stop the 'Mother of Tears' before her evil conquers the world.
The Weinstein Company has acquired domestic distribution rights to Dario Argento's forthcoming Giallo, which is still yet to be filmed. Giallo stars Vincent Gallo as a serial killer and Ray Liotta as the detective who is pursuing him. The Weinstein's have also committed to distribute Argento's The Mother of Tears on DVD here in the States via Genius Products. Myraid is planning a limited NC-17 release for the film this spring.
NC-17 horror movies? Wow!
