Has anyone seen Hooper's latest - Mortuary? It's a lovely comeback to the tongue-in-cheek horror of the 80's, one that you wouldn't expect from the maker of the uber-grim Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the weakest episode of the recent Masters Of Horror series.
The plot is similar to a cult favourite Night Life (a horror-comedy with Scott Grimes): a family moves to a house with a mortuary and, as one would expect, the dead in the mortuary soon transform into cheesy zombies. The film is wonderfully OTT and some secondary characters (the cop, the giggling man) are so loud-out-funny you won't believe it!
Much recommended to anyone who enjoys the horror of the 80's!

Hmm, now this is weird as I've heard conflicting reviews of it. Do you think the humor was planned or unintended, as some have said. If so, I'll give it a pass but won't expect much, as the negative side seem to have more members to it.

The humour here is DEFINITELY intended - whoever says it's unintended is full of bull! It's like saying that Larry Cohen's The Stuff is funny for the wrong reasons - it just means that a person can't get this type of humour and I pity him/her for that!
Really: I liked this film a lot and laughed my arse off.

Well, the Sci-Fi Channel has this one stated to air on March 25 here, so I'll be sure to check it out. If it was intended, sounds like fun.

Not to spoil the topic here guys But I think Tobe Hooper is a hack. I know... I should be burned for saying that but seriously. I loved Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist but her has made some God awful films. I recently saw Tool Box Murders and thought that was TERRIBLE!!!!
So I don't think he will ever be "back" Maybe back in the sense of making terrible films LOL

No, I think those are both great films, and I was quite entertained by the Tool Box remake, I liked it better than the original, and I also found Crocodile rather good, I haven't been too impressed than the others, which leaves mainly Eaten Alive and Lifeforce as ones that bit the dust, but if it's like his Masters of Horror episode, then yeah, this one may suck. However, I do trust Bart's judgment on this one, so I'll keep an eye out for it.

I mean Texas Chainsaw Massacre was awesome, but TCM2? Holy shit was that movie ever BAD! I think the high-point of his career was Poltergiest, and honestly, Spielberg really helped to make that movie shine. Without him it might very well have sucked. Also, hasn't anyone else seen "Invaders From Mars" from 1986? Tobe Hooper's remake of 60's SF film of the same name? It's horror for kids and surpisingly awful. I got a review of it on here.

I thought it wasn't too bad. It was at least entertaining enough to keep me awake while watching it at midnight. The humor was definately intended, although after awhile the giggling man, as Bart called him, just started to be annoying to me. Still a good character though. The cop was a bit creepy. The funniest part to me was when the mortician was trying to do her first embalming. I was actually laughing out loud at that one. ;D Liked the ending....it caught me by suprise. Overall I enjoyed it.

As expected, here's my thoughts, minus the usual plot and other review sections:
The Good News: I thought this was a great and original way of getting to a zombie movie. Rather than the usual radiation leak or voodoo curse, we get an entirely new motive to get them around, and it was pretty original. I’ll admit to never thinking of it, and with the shortage of originality today in the genre, this was sorely needed. Even the method to get rid of the zombies was pretty clever, and the reasoning behind it sounded valid for once. That could actually happen in real life, and it gave a small touch of realism to it that was also needed in the film. It didn’t rely on the over-used bullet-to-the-head that is so common for zombie movies. The zombies themselves, when they are on-screen, are pretty gruesome looking, and several have the customary rotting and decayed look to them. I was even surprised to find a bit of humor in here as well. I laughed at it a couple times, so it earns points for that as well.
The Bad News: The film is really slow, and it takes forever for something to happen. The first twenty minutes features no real action at all, and even the zombies don’t appear until well into the movie. The beginning is just maddingly slow, and those wanting an all-out zombie film are gonna be really disappointed with this one as it’s hardly got any of the tradition zombie film parts. Its taken up instead with a teen-drama story that really doesn’t do much, even though it occupies most of the time. It has a potentially great story, but the weak beginning is a real problem.
