Satan, Lucifer, The Prince of Darkness, The Lord of Lies, Beelzebub, or just plain old Devil. Whatever you call him, he's been played on film a whole bunch of times, by a whole bunch of different actors. Now before anyone starts yelling, "Hey, where's THE EXORCIST??", I wanted this poll to focus on actors who actually played Satan on-screen. In THE EXORCIST we see a little girl possessed by him and only hear his voice, provided by actress Mercedes McCambridge. Anyway, I'm gonna go with DeNiro as Louis Cypher in ANGEL HEART. A great low-key performance makes the character seem dark & mysterious, but almost never overtly evil. And why is this poll in the Horror section? The Devil can be a pretty scary dude.

Al Pacino in the Devil's Advocate.

The Passion Of The Christ Satan would be my second choice, but Al Pacino in Devil's Advocate wins the poll for me. Not entirely serious in the role - which bothered me at first - he played it with lots of grace and energy.
De Niro in Harry Angel disappointed me - but it was probably more fault of Alan Parker's soulless directing than Robert's playing the character.

Went with Rosalinda Celentano. Her performance was very eerie and sent a shiver down my spine.

Her Satan is the most chilling in the poll - I agree. Pacino won it for me 'cause his character was just less in the background than hers.

I had to be different & voted for Viggo in Prophecy. But Al's performance in DA was great & the one from POTC was just plain scary....I had nightmares afterwards.

My favorite version of Satan... is one which isn't on this poll, and which many people will probably disagree with:
The girl in "Prince of Darkness" (unfortunately, I can't remember her name)
I like the fact that here Satan is potrayed as a more childlike, almost gleefuly innocent being --but nevertheless hideously powerful and evil. Pretty original, I'd say.
Pacino was quite fine, played his role with gusto... I did like De Niro in Angel Hearth, but somehow he seemed more like an emissary from hell rather than Satan himself (did that make any sense?)
The one in "The Passion" was subtly creepy, true... but I think I prefer the
**POSSIBLE SPOILER FOR "The last temptation of Christ"**
Young blonde girl in the above mentioned Scorsese film --certainly I also prefer this movie to Gibson's, but that's another topic.
**END OF SPOILER**

... I did like De Niro in Angel Hearth, but somehow he seemed more like an emissary from hell rather than Satan himself (did that make any sense?) Yes, it did! I felt the same about De Niro's Satan. And good point with The Last Temptation Of Christ Satan: now that was a thrilling moment in the movie! All in all, I much prefer The Passion to The Last Temptation, but this piece was a winner!

I didn't realize that was Viggo Mortenson in Prophecy all these years!! I've only really become familiar with him since Lord of the Rings & History of Violence (and Leatherface: TCMIII).
I loved that Satan, he was awesome.

Pacino in "The Devil's Advocate" was absolutely phenomenal. Oh my God.
LOL.
Oh, and I liked The Devil in "The Passion," probably because I am a very religious person (not a psycho, but very religious) and I liked that movie.

I didn't realize that was Viggo Mortenson in Prophecy all these years!! Oh yeah, that was him. That's the first movie I saw him in & it made me a fan. I think it's a combination of the look & the voice that made him a good Satan. I love the line in the movie that was something to the effect of "We'll feast on the guts of your little Mary...". That reminds me...I really need to buy that dvd.

I just realized that Viggo was in GI Jane.
My vote WAS going to go for Harvey Keitel in that one shitty Adam Sandler movie before I remembered I hate almost all Adam Sandler movies so....
The little girl in Last Temptation for the reasons mentioned. SHOCKER SHOCKER SHOCKER! Isn't that the church's real stance on Satan? Innocent and good-looking and seemingly charmful, then he'll (she'll, it'll) FUCK YOU OVER.
That Passion's Satan was a bit creepy (actually one of the one or two good points about that film).
What about the Satan from the South Park movie? Or do animated characters not count?
