With all the Barker/Hellraiser talk going on lately, I thought I'd see what you guys thought was the best movie taken from one of his books or short stories.
I, of course, voted for Hellraiser, b/c I think it's the darkest story of the lot & they really captured that w/ the movie. My second choice would be Nightbreed, which also happens to be my second favorite story after Hellraiser.

Definitely HELLRAISER! Here's my Pinhead figure standing between The Bride, who looks like she's mistaken him for Bill, and my figure of the Governor of California! ;D

Oh yeah! ;D
And my fave is Hellraiser. Candyman was pretty atmospheric, too, but all in all not as good as Hellraiser. Lord Of Illusions had a good start but then went down. And the rest of them were disappointing (the only one I haven't seen is The Forbidden... oh, wait: and Saint Sinner - but that one even sounds lame).

I wasn't too impressed w/ Lord of Illusions. I liked Nightbreed, even though it was low budget. Just seeing all those creatures that came out of Clive's imagination is amazing.

Nightbreed had some disturbing creatures, that's true, and up to a certain point I liked it a lot, but somewhere near the middle I stopped buying the plot and stopped caring for the characters. Not a bad flick but still a remarkable disappointment for me.

"Saint sinner" is the only one I haven't seen (and from what I hear, I haven't missed much); as for the rest of the movies I just plain love all of them.
- Hellraiser is the one I voted for, as it is probably the best adaptation. An horror classic in itself.
- Candyman is another personal favorite. However, I like this better as a movie rather than as an adaptation --it does not much resemble Clive's original story. But Bernand Rose is a genius, and Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd were never better. Plenty of atmosphere and a very misunderstood ending, too.
- Nightbreed. This is also pretty close to the source material (his nouvelle Cabal), but yeah, there is a point where the characters stop being too interesting (althrough Lori and Dr. Decker were both cool in very different ways); but the creature effects and the ending almost make up for it.
- Lord of illusions... well, this one doesn't stay close to the short story, and in structure it's much more like his novels: a simple suspense riff that escalates into a fantasy epic. I love his novels, but I don't think this structure translates well into the movies.
- The forbidden was also pretty good, considering that it is a college student project. Same goes for Salome, not listed.

...Bernand Rose is a genius... Candyman gave us a glimpse at what he could do if he was pursuing his director's career. However, what he does right now is more like experimenting with movies no one watches... or am I wrong? Last time I heard of Rose he was greatly pissed at today's filmmaking and saying he is never going to direct a "normal" (the Candyman-way normal) movie again. Anyone knows something more about him? Did he break his oath or what?

Last time I heard of Rose he was greatly pissed at today's filmmaking and saying he is never going to direct a "normal" (the Candyman-way normal) movie again. Anyone knows something more about him? Did he break his oath or what? From what I read, his statement was that he liked the new digital video format because it'd allow him to do his own movies entirely in his own way, without any studio pressuring him. Both Candyman and Paperhouse (also worth watching) were done with a studio, yes, but they were independent productions. What he stated is that he wouldn't use film (as in the material) for his movies any more if it meant having to compromise his vision. He has moved on to do art films, which means that they ARE seen, but by a much more limited audience. He's helming another movie as I write this. Can't remember the title.

I went with everyone else here by voting Hellraiser. The Chatterer is one of my all time favorite horror creations! Love the pic of your figures Heineken! Where did you take that picture? The background looks like they're in a cave.

In other Clive Barker news. This was sent in to AintItCoolNews by someone who says they met Mr. Barker at a recent book signing.
Have any of you seen The Tortured Souls action figures? I didn't buy them, but they were way wicked. Should be pretty interesting on screen.

I didn't get them either but it will be a seriously nasty movie indeed. Lots of cool make-up work I'm sure. The grossest one was like this big fat man with his stomach open with pins...I couldn't see myself displaying that on the shelf. Still, it will work well in a horror movie.

Hellraiser gets my vote with Nightbreed in close second place.
