Medieval fantasy concerning "Claymores" --a mysterious group of female bounty hunters armed with the giant swords that give them their names. They are in charge of fighting Yoma, shape-shifting demons that feed on human entrails. But the Claymores themselves aren't entirely human, and when a human boy named Raki befriends one of the Claymores, Clare, he will slowly learn of the many terrible secrets both behind the Claymores themselves and in Clare's origin in particular.
Terrific anime that blends action, fantasy, and horror, with a complex yet straightforward mythology, memorable characters and plenty of plot twists along the way. The dinamic between the main characters is interesting in its' reversal of traditional "high fantasy" gender roles --here the woman is the though and stoic warrior, while the man is essentially the wide-eyed damsel in distress. (For that matter, the reason given as to why all Claymores are women is... an interesting, if perhaps mildly insulting idea). As this was adapted from a still-running manga, the ending not only leaves a lot of questions unanswered, but has been critized as not quite fitting with the overall tone of the series (to put it kindly) --but frankly, a surprisingly optimistic conclusion to a pervasively dark storyline is something I don't mind once in while.
