"Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" is a simply enjoyable film.
**SPOILERS**
Coming back to his hometown, Arbie, (Jason Yachanin) finds his old girlfriend Wendy, (Kate Graham) has decided to become lesbian with activist Micki, (Allyson Sereboff) and that they are protesting the American Chicken Bunker's newest restaurant. Deciding to get a job there to spite her, he finds that work with Denny, (Joshua Olatunde) Humus, (Rose Ghavami) and Paco Bell, (Khalid Rivera) is enabling him to be surrounded by the same kind as he is. Noticing that they resort to sometimes less than reputable methods in order to prepare food, he agrees to it all to try to win her back, but when they realize that the place was built over an ancient Indian burial ground, their behavior unleashes their furious spirits. Soon, an onslaught of ravenous chicken-people and zombies are upon them, forcing them into action to get out alive.
The Good News: This was an absolute blast and had a lot going for it. One of the main ones is that the film has such an absurd sense of humor that it really doesn't take a whole lot for this one to score a laugh at all, and a pretty good one at that. The general plot idea is good enough for a chuckle, and that this one never goes for the straight-and-serious approach, not that there was much of a chance it would've anyway, allows for plenty of just plain weird and funny laugh-out-loud moments that work. It would take forever to list many of the wonderful sketches, from the sight gags with the poisoned food to the attitudes of the zombies taking out their victims to the wonderful opening in the graveyard and just about every one-liner thrown about in regards to the film's plot, and much, much more are used in here used and it's all quite fun and highly enjoyable. Another really big plus is the film's incredible amount of gore on display. This one is just absolutely over-the-top with it's display, and even when it uses them for a laugh, there's hardly anything that can be said for how much is spilled in here. The beginning parts are played for comedy, with there being a hand shoved into a posterior and emerging out the mouth, forced into a meat slicer from a reanimated chicken carcass, having a skeleton emerge from within a corpse by ripping the way and having a broom rammed into a person from behind and splattering the walls with more blood and goo than humanly possible, it's quite hard to take them without being goofy and funny, but they are also insanely funny in the context of the scene are part of the fun. Once it gets to the wide-ranging rampage at the end, there's just no shortage to what happens to the gore content in here. There's a leg amputated with a butcher knife, a face sliced up with a meat cutter, another has their head cracked against a stove with the brains dripping out and later prepared, nuggets flying into a face and devour away, one has their legs pulled apart like a wishbone, a slew of decapitations and facial pecking, a couple have their insides ripped open and devoured and much, much more. None of that's included in the violence against the zombies, leaving this one positively stacked with goodness. The zombies here are absolutely splendid, looking exactly what would be expected if the recently-deceased where to be crossed with a chicken, sprouting the feathers, wings and facial features, namely beaks, and feat, leaving it to be a memorable appearance and quite satisfactory. The chicken monster that also appears is quite impressive, a large, looming monstrosity that towers over the others and is a great-looking monster that is well-handled overall. There's also a ton of fantastic action in here, with plenty of scenes that serve to keep the momentum up and never really bogging down, making it a relatively easy watch for it's length. The constant nudity also doesn't disappoint, leaving a good impression due to it's quantity. The last plus here is the fact that, as a musical, it had some extremely funny numbers and definitely could've used a few more in keeping with the spirit of the film, as the ones in the film were gold. These here are what make this one so entertaining.
The Bad News: This one didn't have too much really wrong with it. The main flaw here is the fact that this one goes for the offensive more often than not, tending to come up with something that might offend anyone at any time. While the gags are genuinely funny, they're also easy to put a spin on to turn them into something offensive, and it's not hard to see where it would go with this type of scenario. Basically, if you're easily offended, then steer clear of this one, or just heed caution and go in knowing that it will try something that will. The only other part here that doesn't work is the fact that this one tends to stop with the musical route nearly half-way through, only to resume it at the end. The songs were funny and getting quite good, and to stop with a winning formula is something that's a little hard to understand. These here are all that work against the film.
The Final Verdict: This one is just a ton of fun and has a lot going for it, maxed out with very few flaws that aren't very detrimental to it. Really give this one a shot if you're a fan of Troma or their kind of films, if it appeals to you or are looking for this kind of film, otherwise if you're easily offended seek caution.
