Shark Hunter-Utterly lame and barely worthwhile killer shark movie, which is even more of an insult when it's more of an adventure story about using a submarine than one about a giant shark. The fact that it's got a body count to rival the average romantic-comedy doesn't do it any favors, the creature is never seen in full, and then the fact that there's no focus on the shark just makes it slow, painful and utterly dull. Not worth mentioning.

April Fool's Day-This was utterly terrible. There was no suspense at all, no intention to make the situation scary, bloodless kills, a premise so lame it hurt my intelligence at the time since I had it figured out even before the accident happened that launched the film into it's proper paces and a final reveal that is just moronically stupid and really does nothing at all. While a few of the stalking scenes do get a little bit of energy and excitement from them, a grand total of three minutes of fun in an 90 minute exercise in boredom doesn't make for a good time. Even though I'm not fond at all of the original, skip this remake.

Black Ops-Man, why is it that I'm watching just nothing but utter crap? The trend continues here with this bland, uninspired and terrible ghost film that never seems to know if it's a killer ghost film or a possession film, as the main villain can possess bodies and send them on a killing spree or just does it himself as the reincarnated body of his original self, and the whole thing is a mess. Coupled with absolutely no kills on-screen, terrible MTV-style editing to obscure the attacks that do happen and a proclivity to wander around for ages with guns targeted down dark hallways that lead nowhere for minutes at a time, this one is just bad. Two or three of the attacks do infuse it with some energy, but really, it's not worth it.
You Belong to Me-Yet another really bad film, and yet another Lifetime film to boot. This one wasn't even worth being called a horror film, just a drama-thriller that doesn't even get the slightest bit interesting until the final moments, when it turns out to be a classic bait-and-switch by claiming all along to be a ghost film but instead turns into a stalker film, and while there's a couple of scenes early on that do make it a possibility, the fact that the majority of it makes it seem like a haunted house/ghost film just manages to make that all the more infuriating. Really aggravating and annoying.

Laid to Rest-And finally, my recent indulgent into crap comes to an end with a rather fun and enjoyable slasher that manages to get a lot right with only a few small flaws. With a great premise, about a woman waking up in a casket with no memory only to find that a serial killer is after her and everyone she comes into contact with, must use the few clues she stumbles upon to find out how to stop the psychopath, some fantastic kills resulting in some great gore, lots of confrontations with the killer so it's got plenty of action, a few memorable suspense scenes thrown in and a fantastic finale all wrapped together into a fun time. While there was a long stretch with very few kills and a few irritating characters, these aren't really that detrimental to this one. It was a lot of fun.

Empire of the Ants-I actually thought this one was better than it should be, a really fun giant monster movie for the most part that manages to leave a lot of really obvious flaws totally oblivious until later reflection, as the majority of the film is filled with fun attack after fun attack, leaving it with a much more realistic sense of pace and enjoyment than most others out there while also managing to use a few great tricks every now and then to it's advantage, including some of the most realistic giant ant props for the attacks than would be expected. The ending to this one is a pure mess that really is where the flaws come in, but before that it's a real winner of a cheesy, giant monster movie.
Lockjaw: Rise of the Kulev Serpent-Calculate this one up as a major disappointment, as this one had the potential to be one of the Sci-Fi Channel's best of the year, but instead this one here has way too many flaws for it to be really enjoyable. First is the film's way too frantic plot that makes it impossible to really tell what's going on since it's off to the next scene before we know what happened, giving it a rushed feeling that prevents any fear from actually registering or allowing any suspense to build up over the creature killing everyone off, yet another problem on it's own. Mixed with way too short, although fun when shown, stalking scenes and a finale that was just utterly stupid all the way around, this one falls really short.
Kinky Killers-This one was just a pure waste and really only offered up nudity, none of which was really appealing anyway as all the ones who should've provided it stayed clean and the ones that looked like they would've done good with it turned out to be a disappointment when it happened, leaving a really foul aftertaste. It also doesn't help that the film offers up no real horror or even a scary moment despite it being about a serial killer, since all the victims are found mutilated after-the-fact and get just brief glimpses or a detailed description about what they look like without seeing it, leaving even more of a sour taste. With a detective angle trying to find the killer just being a pure waste, this here is a skipable movie all around.
Kingdom of the Spiders-Finally, something good, as this one managed to be the most entertaining of the bunch. Due mainly to the use of actual spiders, there's a real sense that they're deadly and dangerous and it's a much more realistic scenario for it. It doesn't help that there's a plethora of attack scenes in here, both of the human and animal variety, which helps build-up a suspenseful story rather nicely while also managing to make note of the smaller body count than usual. It probably could've used a little more in the first half to get it going a little bit more, but once it gets to the final half, it's almost non-stop with great attack scenes one-after-another, leaving it with a higher rating than normal despite a few flaws early on.

PINOCCHIO (1940)
Disney's animated classic about a toymaker who creates a wooden marionette, names it Pinocchio, and then wishes on a star for a son. A fairy grants him his wish by bringing Pinocchio to life. She promises to turn Pinocchio into a real boy if the puppet will prove himself worthy of it. Of course, Pinocchio runs into all kinds of trouble by not listening to his conscience, embodied by Jiminy Cricket.
One of the best of the early Disney films and still holds up really well today. My four-year old, her first time watching it, was completely captivated by it.

Quarantine-Well, I have to admit that this one was pretty much deadlocked all the way through with good points and bad ones. The sense of realism that runs through, with the opening in the firehouse all the way to the confusion once it all starts going to hell and the reaction from those attacks makes for some really good times, and the attacks that go through are plain brutal and graphic, which is another nice touch. It was just really hard to see through that endlessly aggravating shaking cam used which never once did anything positive for the film. Try to film something that leaves the viewer with some sense of what happened in the frame so they have an idea of what's going on, that's a good thing people. It was a tactic that worked for over 100 years before and had spectacular results with it, why change something like that for the worse? The origin of the virus was also a little wonky and could've been better, but all in all, I can't say I hated what happened here, just thought it was a little uneven.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL (2009)
Director Robert Zemeckis' animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic Victorian-era novel about Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser who is visited by several mysterious Christmas spirits and taken on a journey of self-redemption.
Over the years, everyone from Rich Little to Bill Murray to Patrick Stewart to The Muppets, have done a version of this story, so this is probably the umpteenth remake. Except for an ill-advised and drawn out segment where Scrooge is shrunken, there aren't any real surprises. Zemeckis employs motion capture, the same technology that he used on his previous films, THE POLAR EXPRESS and BEOWULF. Jim Carrey stars as Scrooge, as well as several other characters. He's very good and the visuals are pretty amazing, but that feeling of "been there done that" kind of kept me from totally embracing this movie.
6.5/10
G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA (2009)
The 80's action figure/cartoon/comic book characters are brought to life for this live-action explosion-fest. Dennis Quaid barely keeps a straight face as Hawk, the leader of G.I. Joe, a secret elite military organization taking on an arms dealer and his evil organization.
A lot of wooden acting, even Quaid, ridiculous dialogue, and action scenes piled on top of other action scenes. The chase through Paris goes on and on with cars flying and flipping everywhere. Even though it's live-action, this flick felt more like a cartoon than some actual cartoons. Every character is superhuman and can perform amazing stunts without any real injury, or so it would seem. Pros: Sienna Miller is smoking hot as the villain Baroness, and Ray Park is one of the few actors to emerge unscathed from this debacle since his character Snake Eyes never shows his face and doesn't have to utter a single stupid line of dialogue.
Slightly better than the latest TRANSFORMERS movie, but not much.

War Wolves-Man, after starting out somewhat on a high note, the Sci-Fi Channel originals are really starting to get lower in quality. With the decidedly decent Infestation, the subpar-and-disappointing Lockjaw and this one which falls just below that one, they're really ending on a whimper despite starting off with three in a row that are still in contention for their best offerings. This one has so much potential, with a squad of soldiers returning from the war infected with a werewolf virus and both a group of hunters and their tormented squad-leader intent on hunting them down for different reasons, but this one still manages to disappoint heavily. The action is so heavily-disjointed from the shaking camera you can't see anything, the werewolves look like utter crap, and you don't even get to see them at all, just fangs and contact lenses to denote they're creatures. Even a couple of really good brawls and fighting scenes can't save this one.

A KNIGHT'S TALE (2001)
After a knight dies, one of his squires (Heath Ledger) puts on the knight's armor and assumes a new identity. He then travels the country with a couple of other squires and a writer, and enters jousting and swordfighting competitions to try to make a living winning tournaments. Of course, along the way he falls for a beautiful girl and tries to keep his true identity hidden from those who would expose and humiliate him.
Strange flick. It's set in medieval times, but there are many intentional modern touches, Nike branding on the armor, phrases that wouldn't have been in use then, and most obviously, the use of classic rock songs by bands like Queen, Thin Lizzy, etc., on the film's soundtrack. Basically a modern sports film, the sport being jousting, set in the past. Outside of the modern twists, it's a pretty ordinary and predictable flick.

Wow what happened here? NO avatar for Heiny, no background thingy... Was wondering the same thing. Looks like Bart was hosting my avatar on Photobucket, like the background, and his account's inactive. Hmm... ANGELS & DEMONS (2009) Symbolist, Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and a physicist, search all around Rome for clues to a conspiracy. The pope has died and the four cardinals who are candidates to be his successor have been kidnapped and will be killed one by one, followed by the complete destruction of Vatican City, by the Illuminati, a secret brotherhood that was supposedly extinct. Sequel to THE DaVINCI CODE is about as good as the first movie. A bit slow at first, but it picks up in the second half. 6.5/10
