Acacia-I wanted to like this one, but frankly, I just couldn't. Too much time spent on subplots which aren't in the least bit scary, plus an extended focus on those same subplots, results in a film that just isn't scary and comes off as really dull, and that includes the extended running time which makes this feel like it's lasting for an eternity. Easily the worst Asian film I've seen since I started up again in the new year. Reincarnation-An outstanding entry that definitely restores my faith in these Asian films, just with the old stand-by of constant confusion. www.imdb.com/title/tt0456630/usercomments-58The Red Shoes-Stands just shy of joining the all-time classics, a slow-burner that works to complete and utter excellence. www.imdb.com/title/tt0468683/usercomments-22Wishing Stairs-A problematic and flawed entry that really could've done more with it's inspired premise and few great scare scenes. www.imdb.com/title/tt0370082/usercomments-18Cello-Not all that bad, definitely could've been better but still somewhat flawed despite some good stuff here and there. www.imdb.com/title/tt0475532/usercomments-19The Ghost-Utterly spectacular ghost entry that I was going to love no matter depending on it's incredible opening, but the rest works as well. www.imdb.com/title/tt0410537/usercomments-26The Giant Spider Invasion-Half-way decent drive-in fare that is better than expected though still features some big problems. www.imdb.com/title/tt0073043/usercomments-97Highlander-See thoughts in Movie Genre thread.

THE RED VIOLIN (1998)
The history of a rare violin that is up for auction is told in flashbacks, including it's creation in 17th century Italy, and through it's many owners and travels over the years. Pretty interesting story with several twists and turns along the way. Samuel L. Jackson stars as a modern day collector trying to establish the identity of the instrument. Well-written and acted.

District 9 6/10- We got free passes to a sneak preview last night and I must say I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The storyline was a lot different than I thought it was going to be and the acting was good. Nice effects and lots of blood and violence.

Sounds like you really liked it, but you only gave it a 6/10? Wassup wit dat? We're going to try to see it tonight. GILDA (1946) Remember that scene in SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION where the prisoners are in the prison movie theater watching an old movie with Rita Hayworth and they go nuts when she makes her first appearance on screen? Well, this is the movie they were watching. This is my first Hayworth film and I have to say, she was every bit as hot as those prisoners were carrying on that she was. Just smoking. The film itself was pretty good too. Johnny Farrell, a professional gambler (Glenn Ford), is hired by shady Ballin Mundson (George Macready), the owner of an illegal casino in Buenos Aires. Things go fine until Mundson marries the sultry Gilda (Hayworth). Seems that Johnny and Gilda used to know each other and had a tumultuous relationship. Of course, the woman comes between the guys. Good film-noir classic with great performances by the three leads. 7/10

DISTRICT 9 (2009)
Low-budget flick, about $30 MIL, about an extraterrestrial race whose mothership seemingly breaks down over Johannesburg, South Africa, and just hovers there. At first the aliens on board, who are malnourished and ill, are welcomed by the earthlings, but eventually they are forced to live in a fenced-in slum dubbed District 9. A government agent, helping to relocate the aliens, is accidentally exposed to their biotechnology and finds himself being transformed into one of the "prawns", the derogatory term given to the aliens by humans. The film then becomes a race against time as the agent has to team up with one of the prawns to try to reverse the process, meanwhile fighting off a government agency who wants to "experiment" on him, as well as the African gangs who run the slums.
Creative and original film-making by writer-director Neill Blomkamp. For instance, actual South African riot footage is combined with CGI to create some interesting scenes. And the documentary style used for a lot of the film gives it a more realistic feel. Features some sly social commentary and is more of a 'thinking man's" sci-fi film, but isn't so deep that it's not above some slam-bang TRANSFORMERS or ROBOCOP-style action in it's second half.
8/10

HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (2004)
A pair of stoner roommates get high, get the munchies, and after seeing a commercial, decide to go to White Castle to satisfy their cravings. Of course, getting there proves more difficult then they imagined as they run into many obstacles along the way, including a raccoon, a racist police officer, and an out of his mind Neil Patrick Harris. That simple premise turns out to actually be quite funny.
7.5/10
HAROLD & KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY (2008)
Picking up immediately where the first one left off, Harold and Kumar decide to go to Amsterdam. On the plane, Kumar, who can't wait until they arrive in Amsterdam, where smoking pot is legal, lights up his new home-made bong in the bathroom. The device is mistaken for a bomb by air marshals and the pair are arrested as terrorists and sent to Guantanamo Bay. Like the title says, they escape, and another mishap and adventure-filled road trip ensues. Obviously doesn't have the novelty or freshness of the original, but still has some laughs.
6.5/10
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (2009)
During World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the German army by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The few they allow to live, are forever branded with a swastika carved into their foreheads. The group target a movie theater in Nazi-occupied France that is going to be hosting a major propaganda film where many important members of the Third Reich, including Hitler himself, are expected to be in attendance. However, the Basterds are unaware that the French-Jewish girl who runs the movie theater is hatching her own revenge plot against the Nazi-filled theater audience. WWII as only Quentin Tarantino could do it. A fantasy/revenge tale filled with some colorful characters, witty dialogue, abrupt scenes of violence, and a few sequences (especially the farmhouse and the tavern scenes) that are so tense and suspenseful you could hear a pin drop in the theater. Brad Pitt is very good, and funny, as Lt. Aldo Raine, the leader of the Basterds, but Christian Waltz, who plays Nazi "Jew Hunter" SS Colonel Hans Landa steals the whole film. He brilliantly plays this villainous character and is almost a sure bet for a best supporting actor Oscar next year.
