Star Trek (2009, J.J. Abrams)
I think J.J. Abrams just converted me to Trekkie. This film was damn near perfect to me. The cast was all great, the visual effects were stellar... It's my new favorite Star Trek film that works both as a series reboot as well as a part of the original storyline (they have a device which allows this). So far, I consider this the best movie of 2009, and should be up there with all the Sci-fi classics in general. 9 (possibly even a 10)/10

The Company of Wolves (1984) A dark and surreal retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. An odd werewolf film, heavy on symbolism and atmosphere. Visually, it works very well most of the time but it doesn't flow particularly well, its just a tad disjointed (but since its told through the nightmares of a teenage girl, I guess its a bit ridiculous to criticize it for that). Its an interesting film, and I really did like it, but sometimes its just a bit hard to get into. 7.5/10 Away from Her (2006) A long married couple's relationship is damaged when the wife, Fiona, is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, is institutionalized and begins to fall in love with another man. Acting is very good, Julie Christie is outstanding as Fiona, a beautiful and intelligent woman that is stricken with the disease. And Gordon Pinsent, as her husband, is nearly as good. The movie itself is terribly sad and mostly well made, but hits some false notes. For instance, they put her in a care facility far too early. And there are a couple of other problems I had with the story. Overall though, the acting more than makes up for it. 8/10 The Burrowers (2008) In 1879, a family mysteriously disappears and its believed they were abducted by Native Americans. A group of men ride out to find them, but encounter the REAL reason they have disappeared, creatures that live underground that come up to feast on the townspeople. Story and cast are fine, and the creatures are kind of cool but it doesn't always live up to its potential. It kind of drags off and on. Worth watching once though. 6/10 Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) The Candyman has been called to New Orleans, where he, as he is wont to do, brutally murders those that are foolish enough to summon him. Annie Tarrant, a teacher, is his next intended victim, and the murders are pinned on her brother Ethan. ' Not nearly as good as the first one, but I actually enjoyed it....as horror sequels go....its not bad. 6.5/10 The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are called back to Narnia in order to help the rightful heir to the throne, Prince Caspian, overthrow his evil uncle, now in power. Putting aside the books, which I loved when I was a kid, I think this is a good fantasy film that is as every bit as good as the first one, with lots of heart. And its just fun to watch. I liked it a lot. But then again, I am pretty easy to please. 8/10 Laid to Rest (2009) A slasher about a young woman that wakes up with a head injury, trapped in a coffin, with no memory of who she is, or how she got there. She's been abducted by a serial killer Chrome Skull, and she is trapped in an isolated, rural town. Oh and she apparently lost whatever common sense she had right along with her memory.... I wanted so much to like this (and yeah, okay, I kinda did...haha) as they got so much right visually to get so much WRONG script wise. The gore effects and kills were great, the killer looked AWESOME. But damn, the people were morons (I mean the one guy doesn't know the first thing about the internet? Seriously? and he's the character I liked that actually seemed to have some sense at least part of the time), they keep going back to the places that the killer has tormented them, oh and they never just drive to a phone. At first, I thought it was because they were so far away from one (hey, I can suspend my disbelief as good as the next person) but it was only 11 miles to the store. 11 MILES?!?!?!?! I'm still hoping I just heard that part wrong. Oh and if you are going to pull a gun on someone dressed like this guy.....you better be ready to shoot him. *sighs* Did I mention the killer looked AWESOME? 5/10

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
I really love the X-Men films (I even really enjoyed the third one, though its not nearly as good as the other two) so I was pretty excited to see this. And I enjoyed it, but its uneven. Nothing spectacular, but hey, it gets the job done, I had fun.
7/10
Splinter (2008)
A young couple and an escaped convict are trapped in an isolated gas station, stalked by a parasitic creature. This is low budget horror done absolutely right in my opinion, the pace is fast, the effects are well done and the acting is actually pretty decent. And its just a lot of fun, it never really tries too hard to be something its not.
8/10
Severance (2006)
A horror comedy. Multi-national weapons company Palisade Defence send their sales division to a remote lodge in mountains for a team building weekend and they are stalked and killed. I soooo wanted to like this (I love horror comedies), and maybe I would have if I hadn't tried to watch it when I was way too tired. Gets it right some of the time (and I liked some of the second half) but it never really worked for me. I didn't laugh nearly as much as I expected to, and sometimes the joke just went on too long. I don't know, maybe I just expected too much, because it was recommended so highly to me by several folks.
5/10

Martyrs (2008)
A French horror drama about Lucie, a young woman who is still traumatized after being kidnapped and horribly abused years earlier. She seeks revenge against her abductors with her friend, Anna. But the reasons for the kidnapping are not what they seem. A hard film to review because it is such a hard film to watch. I want to make this REALLY clear....this is not a film for everyone. There are scenes of abuse, torture and suffering that could be incredibly disturbing to sensitive viewers (they were for me, but keep in mind, I usually tend to stay away from more extreme horror, so that's really kind of subjective, I suppose). I figure this is one of those kinds of films that you either really like and can take something away from, or that you just hate. I can see it from both viewpoints. I actually really liked this film. The biggest problem with it is that it has two distinctly different feels. The first half is different from the second half. It is also one of those movies that is left open to interpretation, there are no clear answers at the end. Its a bleak, sad, and rather unpleasant film......but is it a good film? Yes, I think it is....flawed, certainly, but a good film. I was more disturbed by it then I have been by just about any other recent horror offering but it definitely wasn't a "fun" kind of scary.
8.5/10

Both are fun and entertaining and I feel accomplished what they set out to do.

Repo: The Genetic Opera 6/10- Really liked this one! Very diffferent, very visual...the acting and singing were good. Will definately add this to my dvd collection! X-Men Origins: Wolverine 7/10- Always been a fan of the x-Men movies, really enjoyed this one. Unfortunately, due to a screw up at the movie theatre we missed about the first 10 minutes or so of the movie. It was supposed to start at 4:45, we walked in the theatre at 4:40 and it was already started. But after a little complaining to the manager after it was over we got 3 free movie passes. Anyway, thought the acting was good, the effects were pretty good, except for a couple already mentioned above, the fight scenes were great. Overall entertaining and a good addition to the X-Men franchise. Hopefully there are more Origins movies in the works, with a few improvements here and there.

Reboots and Prequels!! Get yer reboots and prequels here!! ;D STAR TREK (2009) Space... the final frontier. This is the story of young James Kirk, young Spock, and young everybody else who made up the crew of the Starship Enterprise. Their first meetings and their first mission together, against a renegade Romulan, are all chronicled here. The cast is really good, especially Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban as the big three, Kirk, Spock and McCoy, respectively. And Uhura (Zoƫ Saldana) has never been sexier. It's all very fast-paced, features lots of special effects eye candy and it's a LOT of fun. It's also less cerebral than the original series, and several of the movies, tended to be. But that's okay, director J.J. Abrams ( Lost, Alias, Fringe) and company wanted to make a STAR TREK film that would appeal to die-hard Trekkers as well as people who don't know a Vulcan from a Tribble, and in that, I think they mostly succeeded. There are a couple of moments and choices here and there, that did make me scratch my head, but I'm not enough of a purist to let it totally ruin the fun for me. This new STAR TREK definitely falls into the top 4 or 5 best Trek films ever made, much better than the last two NEXT GENERATION movies, and I'm looking forward to future adventures of Kid Kirk and company. 8.5/10 TERMINATOR SALVATION (2009) John Connor (Christian Bale), the leader of the human resistance against Skynet and its Terminators, is finally seen in action in the future war we've heard about, but only seen glimpses of in the past three movies. In this installment, the year is 2018, and while John is a respected soldier and leader, he's not quite yet the number one guy. Along the way, we get re-introduced to his wife Kate (Bryce Dallas Howard), who was played by Clair Danes in T3: RISE OF THE MACHINES and we also see the first meeting between Connor and the teenage Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin, who ironically, also plays young Chekov in STAR TREK). If you remember from the first film, Kyle is the guy who is sent back in time by John Connor to save Sarah Connor ("Come with me if you want to live!") and also impregnates her with.... tada!... John Connor. The main story however is about the appearance of a stranger (Sam Worthington) who is more than a little confused. He can't quite explain why he's there, knows nothing of the war with Skynet, and whose last memories were about being executed in prison in 2003. The film also feels a lot like the second MAD MAX movie, THE ROAD WARRIOR, with its post-apocalyptic setting and lots of action taking place in the form of chases on roads and highways. Lots of tips of the hat and homages to the previous films, everything from classic lines of dialogue, to the Guns N' Roses song from T2: JUDGMENT DAY, "You Could Be Mine". It does feel a bit video game-like, but I think that has a lot to do with the setting and the plethora and different styles of Terminators we get this time around, as opposed to just one or two like in the past films. I wasn't blown away, but it's not bad for a set-up film, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds in the next movie. However, I was looking forward to seeing Christian Bale's rant against that cinematographer adjusting the lights, but I guess that scene was cut out. ("Oh.. good for youuuu!!!!) ;D 7/10
