The Board Presents: Best of Vampire films!

Ahhhhhhhhhlright everyone! There hasn't been a "best of" thread in a while where everyone votes on the best of something--like the top comedy movies, top horror films, etc. So, after watching 30 Days of Night, I think it would be nice if we did a "best of" for one of the oldest and most-visited genres in horror moviedom: The Vampire film.


First things, first, though. We need to list as many vampire films as we can. Obviously, some underground sack of crap that no one's really heard of doesn't need to be used, so that'll slim the selection a bit.


Also, to slim it a tad more, these are vampire-only films. Granted, sometimes they turn into wolves and things, but keep "vampire and other" films out[/i] of the polling! No Underworld or Vampires vs. Zombies or Dracula vs. Frankenstein kind of stuff! Sorry, but this will be a truly MASSIVE listing of films, and we need to keep it clean!

I've asked Slayrrr to submit films as well, and hopefully LDG and Bart and anyone else will fill in the cracks we leave.


The guidelines for the Board's Favorite: Best of Vampire Films:


1. Genuine vampire horror films--reinterpreted rules and the like are O.K. What this means is that the focus of the horror element is a vampire, group of vampires, blood suckers and the like. Horror films with a comedic element (ie Fright Night, Bordello of Blood) work, but comedies with a horror theme (Dracula: Dead and Loving It) don't qualify.
2. Theatrical releases, Hollywood releases, underground releases, direct to video/DVD releases all O.K.
3. Made-for-TV or mini-series' not O.K.
4. No Vampires+other monster stuff. Vampires that turn into other monsters (i.e. wolves, bats, your Mom, etc), is O.K.
5. PM your list of 10-15 top vampire films to me I'll compile them in the end for a big reveal! [EDITED]

Yup, made for tv.
Also, regarding NIGHTSTALKER (1972) was that the Darren MacGavin tv series? Or was that a theatrical film first?

How about DRACULA (1979) Starring Frank Langella as Dracula and Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing?
Also, I don't think you listed any of the Christopher Lee Dracula flicks by Hammer.

What about The Hunger (1983) with David Bowie and Susan Sarandon?

They might have shown SALEM'S LOT theatrically in other countries. Pretty sure in the states it was only the mini-series. So are we counting theatrical from countries outside the U.S even if it was only on TV here in the states? They do that a lot in other countries. Even the old Spider-Man tv series from the 70's was re-edited as a theatrical feature in some countries.

And we can count The Hunger.


Keep in mind, I didn't list every vampire movie, just a "reminder list" of sorts. I know there are some I'm forgetting, there are at least two that I've seen for which I forgot the titles. Somewhat untraditional vampire films, such as Romero's Martin and the original Last Man on Earth can be counted as well. The point is that the focus is a horror element focused on blood-sucking vampires.

I would have to call you on the inclusion of Rabid and The Living Dead Girl, though: Rabid is a creature feature that has vampiric tendencies, though no actual vampire is present in the film. The Living Dead Girl is a zombie film where they switch out the ability of the lead to eat flesh to suck blood.

Other than those, though, I think that's just about all of them. I may have missed a couple here and there, so if you can find them, let me know.

While I agree with slayrrr that this one's debatable, I'd still count it. It's never explained whether the main character is a vampire or a zombie - in fact, would she still look as fresh as she did after having been entombed for 2 years if she weren't a vampire? And man does she like blood! Also, Jean Rollin once admitted that the barrels with toxic waste that supposedly awakened the girl were only introduced because it was a fashionable gimmick in the 1980s. And anyway - the movie's already on my list, so... you know... why waste a vote?

If you guys still want it, then I'd let it go. It won't be on my list anyway, but it is really close like Bart said. There's parts that are close to being about vampires and there's parts that aren't and are really close to being about zombies. It's really close.

All right, looked through my list and found really only one that could be included I forgot: Warner Herzog's Nosferatu remake from 79, otherwise the only ones missing will be the ones that are coming direct-to-DVD that only I would have seen or even enjoyed. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I got the important ones that will secure a vote up there: I'm pretty sure no one's going to vote something like Vampiyaz into the list of greatest vampire films, right?
