Just finished watching this. Not bad, but far from very good, too. It had some good photography, cool soundtrack and several tense moments, but too little of all this for 180 minutes. I watched it mainly for the actors (Christa Miller, Daniel Dae Kim; Benjamin Bratt - not so much) and so as to compare it to Robert Wise's 1971 adaptation. The actors didn't disappoint, but this mini-series is nowhere as good as Wise's earlier take on the story.

I haven't even heard of this... Where did it originally air?
For that matter, what's the story about? I know it's Michael Chriton, that's it.

It was on A&E. And the movie is about an INTELLIGENT deadly virus (really: it can, uh, think and communicate, for example) that, surprisingly...
SPOILER!!!
...comes to Earth from the future through a wormhole. The original wasn't as weirdly complicated from what I remember, but it was much better. Haven't read Crichton's book, but the new version is said to differ a lot from what Crichton wrote.

I saw a preview for this in front of a movie the other night. Yeah, it had the title and the basic plot of mutating viruses but it didn't look like anything I remembered from the book.
The 70s version was pure sci-fi pulp gold. Very entertaining. This one looked hokey and like it was trying too hard, you know?

Yeah, I guess they were trying to put too many new things in the new movie, but none of them made it any more interesting or suspenseful than the first adaptation.

There supposed to show it here on Memorial Day. I'll probably try to catch it, I don't even remember if I've seen the original though...

I'm definately going to check out the original, and most likely read the book now. My mom watched the original when it came out, in 71 I think, she said it was pretty good.

I saw it was on the other night when channel surfing, but I wasn't going to be able to watch the whole thing, so I opted out. Bart, or someone, put up a review of the original somewhere. Unfortunately, movies based on Crichton's work tend to be hit or miss.
Jurassic Park? Hit. Congo? Miss. Westworld? Hit. Runaway? Miss. Sphere? ....'
You get the idea.

Yeah, Sphere is a miss, too. And Congo I simply hated - how stupid can a movie get? The original Andromeda Strain is one of the best adaptations of Crichton's writing. I'll do my best to review it one of these days.
And LDG - waiting for your opinion on it.

I actually liked Sphere, though have never read the book. But I left it as a "..." because I know it's not a "hit" Crichton film for everyone.
Oh, another Crichton hit is The 13th Warrior based off Eaters of the Dead which itself is supposedly based on interpreted writings from the real-life Arab who joined the Norsemen on their quest. The exception, however, is that Eaters of the Dead has no conclusion. I think it's one of those rare cases where the movie turned out better than the book. I've read that and both Jurassic Park novels.
