One of the fastest ways to increase a CD collection is to have a friend or someone else with similar musical tastes recommend a band to you thinking you would like them.
So, what's the greatest band you currently listen to that you wouldn't have known about unless someone recommended that you try them?

I think I wouldn't get into King's X had they not be recommended to me. And it's a great band, of course - one of my faves these days.

I think my whole musical taste was thanks to my friends in high school. In the early 80's I was listening to pop...Wham, Culture Club, Duran Duran, etc. Which I still like and still listen to. But then in the mid and late 80's I started hanging with a different group of friends who introduced me to the "hair metal" bands and the rest is history! But they also turned me on to the older stuff like Sabbath, The Doors, Led Zep, etc. My other biggest musical influence were my parents who always listened to the great bands like CCR, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night...so that's what I grew up listening to. I guess there hasn't really been one particual band that I've been introduced to, just a musical taste in general.

Since I forgot mine, it would undoubtedly be King Diamond. He's in my top 5 all-time favorite artists, yet if it wasn't for my cousin turning me onto him when I was just starting to getting into music, I wouldn't have known about him. I've never heard anything about him through any of my usual music channels, he's hardly promoted through the video channels and he would more than likely be one of the thousands of bands that I know off through Blabbermouth that have been reported to be working on new albums yet I have nothing to base his sound on. While my collection is huge, it's impossible for me to count the number of bands in the genres I listen to that are like that, where the only information I have on them is through Blabbermouth reporting on a new album release but has nothing else available. He would be just like those countless numbers of bands that I know of, yet had my cousin not introduced me to him, I would never know of his genius and brilliance. He's never made a band album, and I just love what he does (heavy metal mixed with horror, how can that suck) and yet that's all because of my cousin.

Oh man, that's a tough call...
Recommended bands....
Okay, um:
Anthrax Carcass Destroyer666 Black Label Society Amon Amarth Turbo (from Bart)
These are bands that were recommended to me that turned out to be really good. A lot of bands I discovered myself from blind downloads, occasionally based on reviews on the Metal Archives.
