We've got a thread about the new Outer Limits, we need one about Spielberg's 1985 TV-series, Amazing Stories. What do you remember of it? Did you like it at all? What are your favourite episodes?
I'm just starting to get into it as the first episode has just aired on TV here in Poland. It was about a high school jerk - but a damn handsome one - who gets hit by a meteor and becomes magnetic. Some very funny bits in it but from the scientifical point of view it would probably annoy some people - say, our spacer for one - a lot. Still it was done with enough skill and humour that I'm interested in the rest of the series now.

Like most anthology shows of this nature, it was pretty hit-and-miss. A lot of the stories I saw ended up being not so "AMAZING", or just pretty silly. It's been a long time, so I may be sketchy about some of the details, but I remember one episode about a crew aboard a bomber during WWII, who lost their landing gear, so the guy onboard who was an artist drew some cartoony tires in his sketch pad and the wheels magically appeared below the plane so they could land safely. No, really.

I remember one about a pet plant that had it's own personality? Don't remember the one you mentioned Heineken, although I dont think I ever caught them all when they were on ages and ages ago.
Sci-Fi channel used to have repeat episodes on but I always seemed to catch the same one - the one about the plant!

No, really. You know what's funny? I know what you're talking about. Two other guys and me, back when I worked at UPS, had a debate about where exactly that story came from. I was sure for all these years that it was something from Disney. Like Memphis Belle for dreamers. I know the series, and I found it to be one of the weakest "every show a different story" anthology TV series' out there. But, I'm old fashioned and still consider the original Twilight Zone from the 60's to be the best one ever made. I look forward to long holiday weekends at home so I can watch the marathons on the Sci-Fi Channel! I spent one Independance Day and two New Years watching those marathons. They never get old for me. My problem with Amazing Stories was the silly, if not completely ridiculous, stories that cropped up. Far too few of them were quality shows for me to really get into the show. One of them, Hell Toupe, was spoofed with much better success and quality in a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode. The acting is among the worst of any anthology series, as well. With as low quality as I perceive the show to be, imagine my surprise at seeing Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg's names attached to the show!! Sorry, Bart, just not a fan of Amazing Stories. For me, The Twilight Zone from the 60's is the best, followed by the 90's Tails From the Crypt. I can't wait till New Years...

No, really. I remember this one - actually it was one of the three episodes that made the feature version of the show - Amazing Stories: The Movie - and I saw this one years ago, on VHS. If I remember things right Spielberg himself DIRECTED this episode, can you believe?! This was veeery disappointing indeed. Haven't yet seen the one with the plant, though.

I remeber the one about the airplane too. It's the only specific episode I remember. I probably saw it two or three times. I just kinda watched the series off & on if I happened to catch it. Like Q, I prefer Twilight Zone. Me & my dad used to sit & watch it all the time when I was a kid.

I just saw another episode. Here's why I bothered:
- it was directed by Martin Scorsese, - it was based on Spielberg's own story, - it was about a horror writer haunted by a monster or ghoul from his own books.
And it sucked. Scorsese clearly did a hack job here, the plot was silly and uninvolving. Even the presence of Tim Robbins - as the ghoul - didn't help.

I like the way you seemed to build that up, then smacked us in the face with "It sucked."
How many episodes have you seen, Bart?
Like I said, I thought the series, overall, was pretty weak.

I like the way you seemed to build that up, then smacked us in the face with "It sucked." This is exactly how I felt, Quorth! "Mirror, Mirror" (the Scorsese episode) was the second I watched on TV; previously I only saw Amazing Stories: The Movie which consisted of three episodes glued together and wasn't too good, either. Pretty weak it does seem to be, yeah.

It looks like the classic story of the imitators never quite measuring up to the true classic of anthology shows: The Twilight Zone.
I still think Serling did it best.
Speaking of which, I hope Sci-Fi channel does that marathon of those for New Years again. Once my boy goes to bed, I've got nothing better to do. I love watching those classic episodes in those marathons.
