“It Waits” wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been.
**SPOILERS**
While grieving for the loss of her friend, forest ranger Danny St. Claire, (Cerina Vincent) is alone at her watchtower and trying to get over it. When her boyfriend Justin, (Dominic Zamprogna) shows up to lift her spirits, he tries but she still stays in her funk. During their sleep-over that night, they both become aware of something that keeps them their in the tower. When Justin goes out to look for help, Danny realizes that she’s trapped inside the tower with an ancient creature from Indian folklore, she launches a personal assault on the ravenous creature.
The Good News: I really wasn’t expecting this one to be any good. The first thing that strikes you in this is the beautiful scenery and location shooting. It is almost breathtaking to take in the forest here, and it adds a suspense moment to the film that really shouldn’t be there. It’s at once haunting to look at, and yet it gives you the feeling that something is hiding in there. It’s a spooky appearance and setting that is wonderfully captured in here. The film does have some nice action set-pieces as well. The several assaults on the tower are effective and show some real suspense. The ending chase in the forest is real nice, as is the very first encounter. There’s also not the rapid-fire action editing commonly found in those scenes also found anywhere near the scene, making it all the more effective. There’s also some nice and clever jump sequences involved as well, making a middle section that holds up stronger than most similar movies. The constant finding of dead bodies and popping out of weird places really puts it on edge during those times, as you’re caught up in the drama of what’s going on and then a big shock jump occurs in the middle to thrust you back into the story and it works magically. Not to mention that Cerina Vincent is in 90% of the shots, and wearing as low-cut a tank-top as she does in it is never a bad thing.
The Bad News: It’s pretty hard to figure out exactly what’s going on in the movie, as it does an extremely bad job of explaining everything. The creature’s origins are never fully explained, and what is given doesn’t make any sense. It’s nice to hear it comes from ancient Indian customs, but beyond that, anyone can make an educated guess as to what’s the origin and be right. Sadly, all the gore in the film is related to aftereffects and are hardly ever killed on screen. Seeing a bunch of dead bodies lying around isn’t what the gorehounds really want, and it distracts from the viewing as they do look like impressive kills at times.
The Final Verdict: Had it kept in some gore and explained things a little better, this wouldn’t be such a bad movie. Not that it is, I really enjoyed it, but those reasons seem to be keeping everyone from really checking it out. It deserves a shot, as there may be some out there that enjoy this, but it at times can seem like a missfire.
Rated R: Graphic Language, Violence, and a mild sex scene
