“Seed of Chucky” is one of the best ones in the series.
**SPOILERS**
Glen/Glenda, (Billy Boyd) Chucky, (Brad Dourif) and Tiffany’s, (Jennifer Tilly) child, discovers that a movie is being made on his parents in Hollywood. Reviving them, they quickly go about their old ways, much to Glen/Glenda’s chagrin. Chucky and Tiffany decide that they should out away the weapons, especially when they meet up with Jennifer Tilly, (Jennifer Tilly) working on the Chucky and Tiffany movie. Jennifer is angling to get into a new movie with the director, Redman, (Redman) and Chucky and Tiffany find the perfect bodies for their souls. As the deaths pile up, Tiffany is desperate even more to get rid of her slasher habits, which Chucky isn’t too fond of. He eventually results to increasingly desperate measures to keep his fractured family together.
The Good News: This is probably the most out-right comedic movie of the series, and is pretty hilarious in most aspects of the film. The early bickering done between Chucky and Tiffany about family life is some truly great lines, and a later exchange gives some real gut-busters. Even other instances are pretty funny. I don’t want to spoil them, but it has it’s fair share of gags that are both really funny and pretty creative. The storyline here is one of it’s most appealing parts, which is pretty clever and new. It isn’t a typical outline for a film’s fourth sequel, and it serves as a double blessing by not following the norm and giving us a traditional film, and also by the different elements that can be added to the plot. The comedy is one, but there’s a lot more that have been added to it. Several of the storylines are quite good. The wanting to get off murder is nicely handled, and the weaning for killing delivers some of the movie’s best scenes. An impressive opening is just about the only time we get suspense in the film, and it is some really juicy stuff. The stalking and the extremely odd camera angles add to it’s effectiveness, and the pay-off to each of the sequences are nicely timed to get a great jump. The best part of this film, though, is undoubtedly Jennifer Tilly. The amount of abuse she goes though in this film is really phenomenal, and she manages to pull it off quite capably. You always end up feeling for her situation, no matter what she was doing, and that is a real accomplishment.
The Bad News: By veering far off into the comedy angle, this has left the horror category completely. There is nothing here that would produce any sort of thrills or spills, beyond the opening scene, but after that, there’s nothing. Suspense is also gone, leaving us with no real chances to become scared at what is going on. We really weren’t supposed to, but as it’s still trying to be a horror film, an attempt could’ve been made. The film is also tremendously cheesy, packed to the brim with sleazy goodness. From the characters to the actions and even set-ups reek of cheese, and that may be something which won’t sit all that well with fans of the more serious original.
The Final Verdict: This is one of the better films in the series, surpassed only by Bride. It’s a funny take on the film, and yet still provides all the necessary shocks and blood as we have come to expect in this series. Highly recommended to all Chucky fans, as well as those that want a little extra blood in their comedy.
