Transformers: The Movie - My Experience
I saw this movie in the theaters when I was seven years old. I don't think I knew what the hell I was watching. Fast forward twenty years - I still dont know what the hell I was watching.
First off, this movie is beloved by thousands of transformers fans everywhere, to the point it is hard to find on DVD (check ebay for pricing) and the guy where we bought our VHS copy told us, in stoner voice, "that movie is so heavy." I expected a lot because of this, plus I remember vaguely seeing it when I was little girl.
We popped it in and immediately were blasted away by the 80s hairband music. Yup, the entire movie is infused with so much weird cheesy rock music that it's hard to concentrate with what the hell is going on on screen. Which is hard to do in itself because the artwork is strange - there is so much going on at all times with so many robots that I couldn't figure out in battle scenes who was bad, good, or who transformed into what. The makers throw every type of transformer known to man in the movie - Decepticons, Insecticons, and Autobots are the main ones I think. There is also a very annoying kid who wears a transformer suit in there too. They do their best to name everyone in conversations (i.e "thanks soundwave" "your welcome optimus prime") but there are so many characters it's hard to keep track for a noob like me.
There is a plot, thank goodness: there is a battle going on between the Decepticons and the Autobots which is further complicated with this robot-eating superbot called Unicron that eats planets. Destruction ensues.
I will say that they manage to kill off many characters in the movie and it seemed to me someone was dying every 15 minutes or so. My problem? No one mourns the loss for long, and at one point after the death of their leader the Autobots have a dance party around a bonfire with Weird Al (yes, Weird Al) music in the background. I was bewildered.
The ending is short and sweet, and the movie isn't very long at 86 minutes. There are some interesting voice characters: Orson Welles (actually his 'last movie'), Leonard Nemoy, and lots of "I've heard that voice somewhere before..." people. All interesting factoids but not enough to make me think this movie is cool.
I can't say I enjoyed it on any level. I think you may need to be very familiar with the Transformers characters or just like strange cartoons to say it's rockin'.
2/10 for me.
