"Shredder" is a halfway decent slasher movie.
**SPOILERS**
Cole Davidson, (Scott Weinger) his girlfriend Kimberly, (Lindsay McKeon) and their friends Skyler, (Billy O'Sullivan) Kirk, (Peter Riggs) Chad, (Elliot Olson) Pike, (Juleah Weikel) and Robyn (Holly Towne) travel to a ski resort to check up on it. The locales don't like them around and warn them not to go up the mountain. The gang ignores the warnings and skis the mountain anyway. As they do so, they get picked off one by one by a mysterious killer. As they try to stay alive with their numbers dwindling, they unravel a growing mystery about why the killer is attacking them.
The Good News: Right off the bat, we get a great bang: a masked skier chasing down a person and brutally killing them on the ski slopes. It makes for a perfect opening to a film, as it's a shocking scene and gets the audience in the right mood for the rest of the movie. The rest of the movie is really good as well. It's a pretty violent slasher, with all kinds of blood being spilled. We get a decapitation, a pick in the head, a face-beating with a shovel and strangulation with a scarf, among other great kills. They all come along fast and furious with a great pace that never really loses interest. The fact that the film is so short helps out a lot, as the killings seem to come that much faster. That works out to a very fast paced film, and those are very good films. The subplots are great at moving the film along while still staying watchable. We get a couple of different directions than most horror films go with their subplots, and it gives something new to the genre. Normally we never get any soap-opera type stories here, and this one didn't feel intrusive on the slashing at all, surprisingly. It makes the characters seem a little more like regular people you would see in a slasher film, so the characters are more believable for this kind of movie. We also get a pretty great killer in here as well. Dressed as a snow-boarder with the goggles covering the whole face and the bodysuit covering the rest of him is a pretty good outfit to have as a killer, since it makes the killer's identity a true mystery. It can be anyone in that suit, and that makes him a true threat. You don't know who it is that's going around killing people, and that builds up over the film as more people are killed off, leaving the potential list of suspects shorter and shorter. It's also convenient to have a killer dress like that, as he's in a skiing environment and will blend in perfectly with others in the area. That is a pretty novel idea.
The Bad News: The one major gripe I have is that the one woman with the biggest boobs in the film doesn't get naked. Granted, she has two opportunities to do so, but neither does she do so. We get a little side nudity, but nothing frontal. If she was going to do the film, commit and show everything. Don't leave us in suspense of whether or not it will happen.
The Final Verdict: This is a pretty underrated slasher film that features a terrifying killer and a great cast ready to be picked off. It's no classic slasher, but it does serve its purpose for fans of the genre. See it if you like the genre or if you are a big fan of skateboarding movies.
Rated R: Graphic Violence, Language, Nudity and two brief sex scenes
