For the past three months or so, every movie I went to see in theaters (and you guys know I go a lot) contained a trailer for this film. It looked okay at best, so against my better judgment, I went to see this film. After all, a movie with this much advertising CAN'T be all that bad, right?
WRONG! This is one of the worst movies of the year. One of the worst of all time, even. And I don't refer to movies that way lightly. I really mean it.
What the trailers made look like a mystery/thriller filled with twists and turns was in fact a very open-and-shut murder case. This movie makes no attempt to surprise you. It was more focused on its poorly delivered political message about racism. What these poor filmmakers forget is Paul Haggis did that already... WITH twists, turns, and a coherent story.
And don't get me started on the acting. Julianne Moore was in hysterics the entire movie. The only exception to her hysterics were whenever she would take a break to cry. Julianne, you have a wide range of emotions to choose from, and the same two aren't going to win you an Oscar anytime soon. And the saddest part about it, is when it can be said that Brittany Murphy played a better psychotic than Julianne Moore.
The writing was atrocious, as well. Things that were supposed to seem dramatic (accompanied with the shaky cam to "enhance" the effect) ended up being unintentionally funny. In fact, this movie would make the perfect MST3K episode.
So don't be fooled by the trailer, it's very misleading. Go spend your time watching something else. Go see Firewall or Final Destination 3, but do yourselves a favor and avoid Freedomland (unless you, like myself, get a kick out of watching bad movies).
