It's been a long time since the last great live action family film. They're so hard to find these days. Everyone is so intent on playing it safe - they dumb these movies down so much that they even insult the intellectual capacity children have. And kids -- they'll surprise you. Nanny McPhee does not do this.
Emma Thompson wrote a wonderful screenplay. This is the kind of screenplay you would see in a more grown-up film, except for the addition of fantasy elements and the removal of anything inappropriate for children. Which is another thing I loved about the movie, Emma Thompson understands what is appropriate and what isn't. Too many children's film producers are afraid of crossing a certain line, except the line is nowhere near where it should be. Sure, there's innuendo and a little bit of language. And call me crazy, but in order to maintain some degree of realism every family film should have just that.
The actors also did not dumb themselves down. Colin Firth and Emma Thompson gave their usual excellent performances, and those kids were very loveable.
There's really nothing I can say against the movie. If you have kids, or even if you don't, go see it. This is the best family film I have seen in years, and thus far the best movie of 2006.
The Good
--It's a touching and meaningful fable.
--Emma Thompson's writing.
--The performances.
--Wonderful comedic timing.
Didn't Hurt It, Didn't Help It:
--NICE cinematography
--Some of the computer special effects are a little behind the times, but fortunately they're kept to a minimum.
Acting: 10/10
Story: 10/10
Screenplay: 20/20
Direction: 20/20
100%
