I voted for Freddy. You just gotta love the guy! He's got personality & personality goes a long way. He went from bad guy to crowd-pleaser & always leaves you wanting more!
My second choice(very close second) is Top Dollar. He was good for some laughs & you kinda hate to see him bite it in the end.

I picked Freddy for all the reasons already stated by Livingdeadgirl. Most of the others, except Pinhead can be played by anybody in a mask, but Freddy has to be played by Robert Englund. He's the one who gave that character his personality.
Of course you left out the greatest villain of all time, Hint: Look at my avatar!, but I guess it's because he's not a HORROR character, right? Vader is a great villain because he has a complete story arc, unlike a lot of other villains. When we first get to know him he seems like this totally evil character who seems to have no problem killing his own men, let alone the enemy. By the end of EMPIRE he has a whole new dimension to him as he's connected to the main hero in a way we would've never expected. By the end of JEDI he's become this tragic character who finds redemption and is finally at peace. The prequels are interesting because we get to see how he became this way. We see the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader. Now, that is a great villain.

OMG...can't believe I forgot Vader.  Please forgive me & don't chop off any of my limbs or anything.  Anyway, you're right, I guess I was thinking more horror than sci-fi..but yeah, he's def. the best villian of all time, for all the reasons you stated above. So I guess I don't have anything else to add to what you've already said. Except VADER RULES!  |

Hmm - putting Vader in the poll would violate the genre division here, wouldn't it? Probably we could start a villain thread in the Science Or Fiction section as well, but then again - we already know who would win there!
As far as we talk horror, I vote for Fred: the guy's got the right personality, sense of humour and make-up to be my favourite - and easily.
But let's prepare for at least RIP voting otherwise! ;D

Heineken was def. right when he said no one else but Robert Englund could play Freddy. I've seen him in numerous other movies/shows & still can't help but think "Freddy" no matter what I see him in.
