"Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives" is one of the best entries in the series.
**SPOILERS**
Plagued by his dreams of Jason, Tommy Jarvis, (Thom Matthews) now a teenager, heads back to his grave-site to destroy him once and for all. In the process of doing so, Jason is revived and kills several people in the nearby woods. Tommy goes into town to report/warn people of the incident, but Sheriff Garris, (David Kagen) won't hear of it and arrests Tommy on the spot. Sheriff Garris' daughter Megan (Jennifer Cooke) and her counselor friends show up to ask what happened to the camp's leaders, and Tommy warns them of Jason. No one takes him seriously and they return to the camp, right when the new campers show up. Jason wrecks havoc on a paint-ball tournament nearby, then turns his attention to the camp's counselors. After running Cort (Tom Fridley) and girlfriend Nikki (Darcy DeMoss) off the road, Jason heads back to camp to target the remaining counselors, Megan, Sissy (Renee Jones) and Paula (Kerry Noonan). Sheriff Garris discovers the bodies of Jason's earlier works, and knows Tommy is responsible. Escaping capture a second time, Tommy and Megan return to the camp to prove is responsible and end his killing spree one and for all.
The Good News: This is one of my personal favorites in the series. It has a more slasher feel to it than most of the other entries. It is pretty much just a straightforward stalk-and-slash story that is just great to watch. It has plenty of great deaths, most in gory detail. Here, we get one of the more memorable kills in the series: the infamous triple decapitation. This is one of the best kills in the series, and is one of the goriest as well. The heads fly off, and the three bloody stumps fall forward. This is a really great kill, and that is not all we get in the film. We also get a broken beer bottle to the chest, a spear through the head, a knife in the throat, and a complete bodily dismemberment, among other great deaths. For the few who don't like to know what the deaths look like, there is also some blood splatter on windows or walls or on the floor. This will really please the gore-hounds. There is plenty of good deaths and blood flow in the film. I was also surprised at the unusually high number of jumps this movie had. Normally, there is at least one good jump in every movie, but I remember this one having at least five good ones. My favorite is in the beginning. Jason traps a victim in a small puddle near the graveyard, and she attempts to plead for her life. She offers money to Jason to let her live, but she looks down to get the money and looks up to see Jason isn't standing over her. Surprised, she looks around as the camera closes in on her, then Jason suddenly jumps down into the puddle behind her, surprising both her and the viewer. There are also a few cheap jumps where people come running into frame, shocking the person we are focusing on. This happens for several of the scares, but there are some other cheap scares. Jason twice comes crashing through doors to get at people, and they happen within a few minutes of each other. This also features a great suspense scene that is both simple and effective. One of the counselors late in the movie puts a rambunctious camper back to bed, then she walks away. When she lifts her head up, Jason is standing in the window behind her, looking at her. As she leaves, we see Jason following her through the windows on the wall, a window behind her. There is some mild humor in some characters cracking a joke or two about the situation, but there aren't a lot of them to ruin the atmosphere.
The Bad News: About the only thing I don't like about the movie is the fact that Jason's outfit doesn't look all that great. I don't like the new jumpsuit he wears. The old one-piece he wears in the previous movies is a lot better.
The Final Verdict: With a very high body count, lots of gore, and some interesting twists, this is a great film. I don't really know why this is bashed, since it doesn't need nudity to carry the story. Friday fans should look at this with a clear mind, and you should be fine, and all 80's slasher fans will be impressed by this one, as a stand alone it is a very good film.
