Nic Cage kind of needs to get a new agent. Every film since...Adaptation. has had him in some sort of mid-life crisis where he can't do something or has a hard time doing it and is just kind of depressed throughout.
Unfortunatley, The Weather Man falls into this category, but two things: 1) At least it's not one of the mindless drivel action films he does (the only good one being The Rock) and 2) This film is better than most of the others (really Adaptation. is still better).
Certainly it's a lot better than his last effort, Lord of War, which was incredibly sour.
Cage plays the title role (duh), a weather man whose life has already fallen apart and he's trying desperatley to put it back together again. He SO wants to appease his father, played magnificanlty by Michael Caine. This seems to the be the entire reason Cage's character does anything: he wants to make his dad proud--striving too hard and failing.
The kids are alright I suppose. For kids. The little girl gets off kind of annoying at times and there is definitley a moment that makes you go "EWWWWWWWWWW." The boy has the detached demeanor that I suppose his character needs as he's being courted by his counselor (though he's kinda too dense to realize it. This kid's pretty, like, cute, like, already. He's going to be a total hottie. Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod.
Only joking.
But he does do a decent job.
Cage plays the same character. Told through voice-over rants that are entertaining. But again, this is nothing we haven't recently seen in Nicholas Cage movies.
One thing definitley going for the movie is that cinematography. I forgot the name of the guy and am too lazy to look it up on IMDb, but it was pretty gorgeous. Very well done. Plus, this movie has Michael Caine in it, albeit playing a conventional role, but he does a great job.
Overall The Weather Man is an enjoyable movie, darkly humorous and pretty good.
I just wish that Nicholas Cage would start doing something different.
