I know it's impossible to choose 'the scariest scene of the year' but let's play with those 5 Empire choices: pick your favourite and tell us why it's such a creeper.
My choice is the Kathy Bates nude entrance in About Schmidt; I know it's not even a horror and I know some of you may be pissed off with this choice but... eh... have you seen this piece? If you did and it didn't scare at least some shit outta you - you're so macho I'm already afraid! For me it was a Groundbreaking Fright Of The Year, actually: now even Misery becomes more frightening than it was before! ...when I think Kathy could suddenly undress before dealing with James Caan's foot... Damn that's scary!

I picked the leg shaving from Cabin Fever for the gross out effect. The Leatherface thing was pretty creepy though. I haven't seen About Schmidt & from what you said I don't think I want to!

My vote goes to there:
I thought that the scene in Wrong Turn where the girl gets half of her head cut off in the tree was pretty damn creepy.

Yes it was! Not as creepy as our Kathy flashing it all to the unsuspecting Jack, but still...

As I said at the start pf this thread: impossible to think of ALL good frights of the year and find place for them in one poll. But it's always nice to have some of them brought back - just like the one from Wrong Turn right now.

The first scene in the Dawn of the Dead remake where the little girl comes into the bedroom as a zombie was pretty creepy. When I saw her standing at the door I was like, YOW!! And then when the woman is in the bathroom trying to escape & falls in the tub & hits her head, I had a sympathy headache for her for, like two days!

Those two may make The Best Frights Of 2004, I suppose!
Damn, I still didn't see Dawn Of The Dead! ...uh, the new one, of course.

Kathy Bates nude was by far the most frightening thing of 2003. I can't even remember why she was nude. I just remember her walking out to the hottub naked and I tried pushing myself into my seat as far away from the screen as possible. Damn, that Jack is a good actor for being able to do a scene like that.
The Cabin Fever scene was good too, probably my second choice. That was sooooo sick.

I picked the Cabin Fever leg shaving scene.
Surprisingly, Darkness Falls had a few spooks. But I was alone in the theater, and that surround sound REALLY plays tricks on you.

As for Darkness Falls: haven't seen this yet. Should I?
