“Freddy vs. Jason” is one of the best horror films released recently. **SPOILERS** Freddy Krueger, (Robert Englund) tired of being forgotten by the children of Elm Street, appears to Jason's unconscious in the form of his mother to trick Jason into coming back from the dead to kill the teens on Elm Street. At a party one night, Tori Campbell (Monica Keena) and her friends Kia (Kelly Rowland) and Gibb (Katharine Isabelle) are sitting around talking when two guys come over to have sex with the girls. Gibb later finds the blood soaked carcass of her boyfriend and they escape the house. They are spotted by Police Deputy Stubbs (Lochlyn Munro) and escorted back to the police station. Even though the police "suspect" it was Freddy, they are reluctant to acknowledge to Stubbs that Freddy killed the guy. Tori falls asleep in the station and suspects that Freddy Krueger is behind it all. At Westin Mental hospital, Will Rollins (Jason Ritter) and his friend Mark (Brendon Fletcher) receive news of the death and plan their escape for that night. Tori goes to school the next day, and is told the legend of Freddy. That night, a party is held in a giant wheat field, with both Jason and Freddy inflicting major damage. By now, Freddy starts to see that Jason is too troublesome for his own benefit, and attacks Jason, sending both into the dream. The Good News: Right from the beginning, with Freddy's monologue about how he's not scary enough to kill anymore layered over a greatest hits of his kills from the past "Elm Street" movies, you get the feeling that this will be one of Freddy's shining moments. Actually, it couldn't if it tried. Both get so many great scenes that it is impossible not to rot for one the whole time through. Their first battle is a spectacular combination of wire works and CG images as both go flying around the room, smashing into every possible obstacle you could think of. I won't say who won, so you'll have to go see it for yourself, but both fights are bloody, violent, and creative and they never lose your interest. The battle constantly changes sides, so fans of either killer has plenty of opportunities to root for their favorite. Director Ronny Yu did an unbelievable job creating an effective atmosphere to set up many of the movies biggest scares. The opening sequence is so perfect at that. After discovering something shocking, a woman runs around looking for a place to hide. Hiding behind a tree, she looks around and then the inevitable happens. What makes it work is the great setup for it. The fog around the area is chilling, and the dead silence before it happens is quite effective. The first dream is also one of the best scares in the film, with Tori wandering outside a house with the three innocent little girls jumping rope and singing Freddy's nightmare song, then Tori turns around and is face to ugly face with the demon himself, then jolts awake. Pretty big scare there. The blood and gore is as effective and plentiful as the first film, and it might even be the goriest 'Friday', definitely a big plus for gore fans. Some more inventive killings by Jason, and even Freddy gets one good kill scene. Jason here emerges as a true unstoppable force of nature, walking into the party engulfed in flames and still slicing and dicing. Even before that, we get a great kill that was pretty funny. That was the most surprising thing: it was funnier than some may give it credit for. A couple of events and lines draw a laugh or two, and it never really comes across as forced. As usual, the nudity was quiet enjoyable, as the two people who appear naked are nice to look at, and the scenes are long enough to get a good feel for them. With a very fast pace, lots of deaths, good gore and plenty of action, this is a horror fans must see film of the year. The Bad News: Several of the repeated jump attempts can be tiring, but overall, nothing else was wrong with it. The Final Verdict: This is highly enjoyable. There is plenty of blood and gore for gore fans, and enough suspense and shocks for casual horror fans. The death scenes run the gamut from actually being shown to being done off camera but the blood spatters into view to the incredibly funny with a good amount of humor that isn't provided by Freddy, though he still provides a few wisecracks himself. Hopefully, this will not ruin either series for the star killers as it is far too enjoyable not to. Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Nudity, a short sex scene and Drug Use

This film has gotten some flack over the years, but I loved it. I saw it in the theater when it opened and wouldn't have missed it for anything. My only complaints were the now cliche' addition of the stoner loser and stoner jokes (wow, drugs are sooooo cool [/sarcasm]) and the fact that Freddy didn't get enough kills of his own. All done by Jason, not enough by Freddy. I did like the opening of the party in suburbia. That is so old school for slasher films!

I'm also a big fan of this one, obviously. Great pace, plenty of bloody kills, and one of the best last half-hour ever. Really great entry.

I'm not a fan at all of the Jason series, but I have enjoyed several of the Freddy flicks, so I actually saw this at the movies when it was first released. Even own the dvd. For what it is, I found it pretty damn entertaining. It took itself just seriously enough to not sink into total camp.

I thought it was a lot of fun... and I'm really not a fan of Jason at all (always thought of him as a Michael Myers ripoff). But I enjoyed this film, for what it's worth.
A little disappointed they decided not to go with Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash. That would have been fun.

Nice to see that this is a big hit with the mainstream audience rather than the horror-geeks. Really surprising.

Well, Freddy & Jason have always been kind of in the mainstream anyway, haven't they? I figure even non-horror fans know who they are. Kind of like King Kong & Godzilla. The movie was a pretty big box-office hit, and as far as teaming horror icons together, much better than AVP, which I actually expected better things from only to experience crushing disappointment. I thought there was a thread about FREDDY VS. JASON in the horror section, where we were discussing the movie back when it was new, I think that was back before you signed up Slayrrr, I was going to paste the link in here, but I couldn't find it.

I agree this one is really fun! I saw it at the Drive In when it came out and laughed, jumped, and had overall a great time. Your review slayrrr is right on!

Yeah, I get what you're saying but in the context of the film, there's more references to the series that fans of both will get easier than non-fans will (the sanitarium and drug-plotlines are straight out of NOES 3, the scene where Freddy slices Jason's fingers off and he looks down at the stumps is stolen from Friday Part 4 when he's stabbed between the fingers and looks down at the wound, complete with same camera angle and so forth) which are much more in keeping with it being for the fans. I would imagine it was old. It's from 03, and I joined in 05, so that was well before my time here. I agree this one is really fun! I saw it at the Drive In when it came out and laughed, jumped, and had overall a great time. Your review slayrrr is right on! Thank you.

There was a story circulating at one time that Don Mancini, who wrote all the Chucky films, penned a treatment (idea) about a Chucky vs. Freddy and submitted it to New Line Cinema. This was a couple years ago. The claim was that New Line was actually interested in the project.
Another rumor existed of sequels to Freddy vs Jason: Jason vs. Freddy and Nightmare at Camp Crystal Lake
Something along those lines.
The last rumors about the next Friday the 13th were that it involved Quentin Tarantino and that it would be a prequel, likely taking place in the 50's when Jason Voorhees "died" as a child.

I prayed that Tarantino's wasn't real, and it was so I feel good. Another one I remember was that it was Freddy v. Jason v. Ash.
