Saw Dog Soldiers yesterday for the first time,I certainly wouldn't say it's the best werewolf movie, but it's certainly great fun. Excellent dialogue,a well-judged sense of humour {not too much ,just right},effective werewolves.
As for which werewolf movies are better,I would say probably An American Werewolf In London,in my view one of the best combos of horror and humour ever, and a personal fave, the Hammer Curse Of The Werewolf,a bit slow but excellently plotted and quite moving. I quite like Wolf despite it's flaws,or atleast the first hour, especially it's superb Ennio Moricone score.
Was a bit let down by Ginger Snaps after all the praise it generally got-it was OK though. Good performances, but it actually need the creature at the end I thought. Don't really remember Howling much, need to watch that again. I do remember the bit where two people are having sex and they both turn into werewolves! I remember it enjoying it far more than some of the sequels,I stopped after number 4! Company Of Wolves, which I don't think has been mentioned yet,is interesting,a wierd fairytale {Little Red Riding Hood} with werewolves.
O,and Descent is superb,it more than fulfills the promise of Dog Soldiers. It's about six women who sety out ot explore some underground caves and encounter...well,I don't want to ruin it,but it's really gripping, makes terrific use of it's setting, and is even gorier than Dog Soldiers. I may review it at some point.

Tense! Waiting for the review!

Glad to hear that The Descent turned out so good. It seems this year I'll have a lot of movies to look forward to. See, movies like Haute Tension, The gathering, and so on have just started to be announced over here, but probably won't appear for another month or so. Fortunately, it appears that HT will be released uncut.
As for Company of the wolves, I have heard several good things about it and it's by Neil Jordan (In dreams; The crying game), so of course I have to check it out.

The Descent is a winner and The Company Of Wolves a weird classic. Haven't seen Haute Tension yet, but looks like I should like it a lot.
Don't have your hopes too high for The Gathering, though, Fenril: a very disappointing quasi thriller this, only worth checking out for the Ricci girl and some beautiful landscapes.

What's Descent? Is it new? Sounds pretty good.
I wasn't impressed with Ginger Snaps at all. I thought it was teeny-bopper horror for the most part--the characters didn't interest me.

The Descent is the latest film from the director of Dog Soldiers - the guy promises more and more to be a new hope for horror!
I'm glad I saw the film in England cause it's not coming to Poland anytime soon.

However, I still think of The Howling as the best werewolf movie. I think it's better than the way too overrated American Werewolf in London... I even like the design of the werewolves far more. They look better than London. One last thing: why is the transformation scene in London the more favored between the two? It looks so cheap and fake that it becomes a distration. To me, The Howling looks far more accurate as to what a person would actually look like if they were to transform right in front of you. The creepy design of the wolves to begin with, mixed with the lighting and the seriousness of the scene, make it, to me, a far better werewolf transformation. I totally agree. While I enjoy AMERICAN WEREWOLF for what it is, and it's even in my DVD collection, I've always prefered THE HOWLING overall. Back when that movie was first released, 1980 I think, I was about 13 and that transformation scene was downright shocking and it spooked the hell out of me. It was years before I realized that the actor playing Eddie Quist, the guy who transforms in that scene, was Robert Picardo, the actor who played the holographic doctor on STAR TREK: VOYAGER. Talk about acting range. Plus, on top of that transformation, I just thought it was a better story and a better werewolf design. As a bonus, the film has a ton of in-jokes that only real movie and horror fans are going to pick up on. A big thrill for me was getting to meet Dee Wallace at a sci-fi con last year and having her sign my THE HOWLING laserdisc. Very nice lady.

Envy you that! My copy of The Howling still waits for her signature. I'm hoping to someday get actor, Robert Picardo and Director Joe Dante's autographs on it as well. Unfortunately, many of the other cast members have already passed away. John Carradine, Slim Pickens, Christopher Stone, he played Dee's husband in the movie and was also her real-life husband. Even the actress who played sexy she-wolf Marsha has died.

John Carradine, Slim Pickens, Michael Stone, I think that was his name, he played Dee's husband in the movie and was also her real-life husband. Even the actress who played sexy she-wolf Elizabeth has died. Robert Picardo shouldn't be too hard, just keep an eye out for Star Trek conventions and which guests they have. I got Majel Barrett's at the one I attended.

Robert Picardo shouldn't be too hard, just keep an eye out for Star Trek conventions and which guests they have. That's exactly what I was thinking. He actually was at one I attended a few years ago, but I didn't think to bring my HOWLING laserdisc with me back then. Hopefully he'll do more of them in the future. I figure Joe Dante will be the real toughie to get. Anybody here know Mr. Dante? ;D Getting special fx/makeup guy Rob Bottin's autograph on it would be pretty cool too.

Don't have your hopes too high for The Gathering, though, Fenril: a very disappointing quasi thriller this, only worth checking out for the Ricci girl and some beautiful landscapes. You know, it's a very good thing I read your post before seeing the movie, because I just did, yesterday and... well, I didn't hate it at all, but it's definitely nothing like I was expecting. The trailer made it look like a "Mothman prophecies" --type disaster movie with a neat twist concerning the people who attended Christ's crucifixion out of morbidness. Instead, it's a (very) watered down mystery. I still liked bits of it and IMHO "the gathering" themselves were damn freaky people. Nice poster, too (is it the same one overseas? Ours shows the crucifixion reflected in a red eye), but there isn't a single scene that stands out. On "The howling". The girl who played that she-wolf died? That's sad to know, she was so HOT in that movie. I mean, it's sad about the other cast members, too, but... On a ligther note, I REALLY like how this began as a discussion of "Dog Soldiers" and has evolved into a wide variety of topics .

On "The howling". The girl who played that she-wolf died? Yeah, she had cancer. You can read Elisabeth Brooks' IMDB bio here: imdb.com/name/nm0111974/bio

I like it, too - no such thing as Off Topic when the discussion's good! As for The Gathering poster: in Poland we had a standard Ricci's-wide-open-eye-on-one-half-and-a-cross-on-the-other uninteresting thing. As for the girl from The Howling: she was one of the first naked ladies I ever saw! She's DEEPLY in my subconscious by now!
