From Empire:
Moviehole sent a man to Disney on the weekend and found out that there's provisional movement on the Toy Story front and that, if the project goes ahead, it will definitely be theatrical, rather than a dodgy straight-to-video effort. And that's pretty much it.
What we can tell you though is that, with Pixar's contract ending in 2005 with Cars, Disney will in all likelihood be going this one alone. Yes, unthinkable as it seems, Disney have the rights to make sequels to any of the joint ventures (including the likes of Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo) without Pixar's consent or assistance. Clearly this does not bode well for a proposed third outing in the Toy Story franchise.

I absolutely love TOY STORY & TOY STORY 2, but the thought of Disney doing a third one without Pixar, who are the heart & soul of that series, causes me to shudder.

From Dark Horizons: Disney chief executive Michael Eisner has said this week that Walt Disney Pictures is working on two new sequels in the "Toy Story" series at the same time. "We're doing two 'Toy Stories' at once," Eisner said to the NY Daily News.
Both previous "Toy Story" movies were major hits for Pixar Animation Studios and for Disney. But their partnership is ending after two more films, giving Disney the right to make more sequels to its previous films.
A spokeswoman for Disney elaborated, saying, "They're working on different story ideas with the hopes there will be a 'Toy Story 3' and another after that."Let the controversy begin... Heineken I know you have something to say about this.

Holding my tongue. Seriously though, if this happens I'll wait until I see previews before commenting. I do hope they're good, and it's not like I want Disney to screw this up. You just have to worry a little when the people who are most responsible for the success of something are no longer involved.

I am skeptical. Most of Disney's creativity lies with Pixar...their traditional animated ventures are sub par recently (Home on the Range anyone?). I hope they have some good writers for this.

I too liked the first 2 films. If Pixar takes the high road before production of Toy Story 3, Disney might not make this a CGI affair.

Uh, oh. From IMDB:
The Walt Disney Co. has begun setting up a new CGI facility that will be used to produce Toy Story 3, the Hollywood Reporter reported today (Tuesday), citing no sources. In reporting on the studio's plans for the sequel, the trade publication observed that it "could make it more difficult for [Disney] to resume negotiations with Pixar CEO Steve Jobs to extend Pixar's relationship with Disney." Pixar produced the first two Toy Story films and would still be entitled to significant royalties if Disney were to produce the third on its own. Disney's contract with Pixar is due to expire next year, and Jobs has indicated that he has no interest in trying to revive renewal discussions with Disney so long as Michael Eisner remains its CEO.
I wonder if at least Hanks, Allen & the rest of the cast will return if Pixar's not involved.

Yeah, doesn't exactly excite me either. Actually Disney can make sequels to all of the Pixar movies released so far, (TOY STORY, BUG'S LIFE, MONSTERS INC., FINDING NEMO, INCREDIBLES) without the involvement of Pixar.

Yeah, Disney CAN make the sequels, but WHY? For a quick buck. It's sad how big of whores they are.

From Moviehole:
The Washington Times reports that Disney and Pixar will soon announce that they’ve renewed their distribution pact.
Sources point to a new, closer relationship between the former rivals with Pixar's top executives gaining unprecedented access to the "Circle 7," a secret division formed under for Disney Chief Michael Eisner to make sequels to Pixar films.
Disney has already started production on "Toy Story 3" and the division will soon announce a second sequel from among several script in development. It’s apparently going to be either "Finding Nemo 2" or "Monsters, Inc. 2."
A renewal would ensure Disney's distribution rights to Pixar films and also keep the sequel production rights in the House of the Mouse.
Sources indicate the next step -- picking a director -- is on hold until Disney and Pixar close their deal.
But in a sign of how close the two companies have again become, Disney CEO Bob Iger reportedly is keeping Pixar toppertopper Steve Jobs and creative guru John LasseterJohn Lasseter in the loop about developments at Circle 7 -- something former Disney topper Michael Eisner rarely did.
In the past, Jobs has had little good to say about Disney-produced sequels, but he might warm to the idea with the right deal and if Pixar had enough involvement.

From IMDB:
Pixar and Disney have announced they have cancelled plans to make a third installment of the popular Toy Story movies. Studio executives decided the script wasn't up to the standard the previous movies had set and didn't want to make the film with a less than stellar storyline, according to Moviehole.net. The third installment would have featured animated toy astronaut Buzz Lightyear getting recalled to Taiwan after a series of malfunctions.
