I hear The Island didn't make much money in the US. But why, can anyone tell me? According to the knowledge I have about the combination of sci-fi and action cinema, this really is pretty good: the actors, the effects, the humour, the vision of future - it all blends very nicely here, even though sometimes the plot really is overshadowed by the things being blown away. This is Mikey Bay, however, so what can you expect? One of his better films, in my opinion.

It probably bombed because it was original and lately, Americans just don't flock to originality.
We've been force-fed a near constant stream of remakes, sequels, and straight-from-book shit for the last several years.

That's funny Quorth - I skipped it because I heard it was very unoriginal. I like the two main actors but my fellow sci-fi friends who saw it told me to save my money because I would only be disappointed by another predictable Hollywood ending.
This movie is from the man who brought us 'PEARL HARBOR' (Michael Bay) and I didn't want to have to spend my hard earned cash for another crap-fest.

I kinda meant "original" in the sense that it was one of our few films this year that wasn't a sequel/remake or ripped right from a book (as far as I know) or TV show. You know what made it unoriginal? Wait... Wasn't Gov'ner Ahhnold's "6th Day" a movie about "the horrors of cloning?"

Originality is not something this movie is being accused of.
I haven't seen either, but I hear the plot of THE ISLAND was lifted straight from THE CLONUS HORROR, a 70's movie. Also reminded some critics of COMA, which I did see. I'm sure I'll eventually catch it on dvd or cable, but not in any real hurry.

I'm still saying: it's a good film, definitely worth watching. And hey: I'm always the first one to point out the crappiness of Pearl Harbor.
Just for Steve Buscemi in another crazy role go see it, guys!

Yeah, The Island is an unashamed rip off of Clonus. It was assumed the director of Clonus was a has been and wouldn't notice. Unforutunately (for Michael Bay) the guy is a successful documentary maker is is currently seeking lawsuit for The Island. Haven't heard how litigation is going on that in awhile.

I'd have to agree with that. How can yah not love Steve Buscemi?? You can't! A question to everybody: what's your favourite Buscemi role? Mine, surprisingly perhaps, is that in the less-widely known Living In Oblivion (directed by the talented Tom DiCillo), where Steve is playing an unfortunate helmer who can't complete his movie. Hilarious!

You should start a "Favorite Steve Buscemi role" poll, so it doesn't get lost in this thread. Buscemi kills me! ;D

With so many good roles we can't make an 8-options-only poll!

With so many good roles we can't make an 8-options-only poll! Didn't you notice, Bart? After the upgrade, you can make polls with tons more options than just 8! Make the Steve Buscemi poll!
