I finished reading Cutthroat (that was a quick one, yes!) and started with King's final volume of the Dark Tower series - a beautiful looking hardback with colourful full-page pics and all. No need to add, perhaps, that the Polish editions I've read before have no pictures whatsoever, so this one is my first full Dark Tower experience, so to speak. The book came to me in the same package with Cutthroat and Ripper by Slade, so you may image how difficult it was for me to decide which one to grab first. And thanks heavens I've got holiday right now!

I just finished MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL by John Berendt.
It's an amazing book. The film, which I saw promptly after, dosen't hold up. The characters are all intoxicating and entertaining. I actually CHEERED at a section. I've never cheered in a book. And as many laughs as a Dave Barry or Christopher Moore book.
Everyone should go out and read it.

Great book! I liked the movie too, but still it wasn't as good as the book.

Watchmen for me - yuck. It's a total 'guy' book in my opinion and I had a lot of trouble getting through it. I hate the 'impotence' storyline as well. Give Owlman some Viagra! I remember reading that and thought 'give me a break, no wonder so many men like it! They can identify!' I prefer it's predecessor, Squadron Supreme. Many of the same themes are there. AND Alan Moore admittedly rips his ending of Watchmen from an Outer Limits episode. I don't think he ripped it off, rather, paid homage to it or was inspired by it. It was a good episode, dammit! And a great graphic novel. But then again, I am a guy... Hey, Owlman couldn't get viagra in 1986! Give him a break! It was a valid storyline! Superheroes have problems too! Sorry about dredging this up so "late after the game" Fenril just called my attention to this conversation which I'd forgotten about. My brain misfires a lot.

Thanks for the response Quorthon. ;D
My opinion still stands but I'm slowly starting to understand why the book is so beloved.
PS. Happy Anniversary!

Just started on Anne Rice's "The Mummy". Before that I read the first of the Jedi Apprentice books, The Rising Force, by Dave Wolverton.

I'm reading the current bestseller The Historian - it's a bit of a frustrating read because the author uses the cliffhanger device at the end of EVERY chapter but it's a pretty good Dracula story.

The only bad thing I heard about The Historian is that it's too mild for such a story. Is it? As for the Campbell book: it seems very short. I was considering buying it, but didn't fancy getting so little for so much. Reading right now: Michael Palin "Sahara", Jose Carlos Somoza "The Thirteenth Lady".

Currently reading "Legion", by William Peter Blatty --his pseudo sequel to "The exorcist". Actually, it's a different story with the survivors from The exorcist as main characters. It's slow as molasses, but there are some interesting bits concerning quarks, the evolution theory, a crucified boy and the need for evil in the universe. Not necessarily in that order.
This was later adapted to the movies as "The exorcist III".

In four days: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Why not tell us what you think of it in the appropriate Potter-devoted thread in this section?
