Burton started his career as an animator for Disney, but has definitely carved a niche for himself as a popular mainstream director of movies with a dark, quirky edge. His movies don't always work from a storytelling perspective, but they're at least visually interesting. I love that Goth look that he seems to use in almost everyone of his films. I picked ED WOOD as my overall favorite. The story works better than most of Burton's movies and the Black & White cinematography is a big bonus. Johnny Depp is hilarious in the title role of one of Hollywood's most inept directors (PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE) and Martin Landau steals every scene he's in, which is hard to do when sharing the screen with Depp, as horror film legend, Bela Lugosi. Still waiting on that much delayed Special Edition DVD. Left out of the poll were MARS ATTACKS!, which personally, I thought was pretty hilarious, but audiences seemd to hate, and the sequel, BATMAN RETURNS. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman was a highlight of that one.

I'm going to be honest with you here (hey - ain't I always? ;D) - Tim is not one of my favourite directors. He's good, yeah, he's definitely a 'cult' one, too, but his new movie being announced never gives me fever - just like Kill Bill does right now, or like De Palma's new movie will when it's finally finished.
I have to say I loved Beetlejuice, though: that's one of my favourite Michael Keaton's roles and a very original blend of horror and comedy... after all these years I still can't think of any other movie being really similar to it!
Haven't seen Ed Wood but I doubt it can beat Juice in my case (Ed is one of those 'titles difficult to get around here' - but I'll try, I really will!); also still waiting for Big Fish to come out on DVD; haven't seen it at the theatre.

I voted for Beetlejuice (I thought it was just twisted!), but my real favorite is The Nightmare Before Christmas. I could watch that over and over and pick out something new each time!

Though I like it too, I didn't include NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS in the poll because Burton only produced it, he didn't actually direct it.

I picked Beetlejuice...one of my all-time fave movies. Michael Keaton is just freakin' hilarious! I really liked Edward Scissorhands though too.

So many Beetlejuice fans here! Good!
On the other hand, I have to admit I don't like Scissorhands too much... hard to say why, really. Maybe because Depp looks so silly there? And all those bright-bright colours there... I much prefer Sleepy Hollow to it.

In this role play, I am describing how the Beetlejuice DVD may suffer the same fate as the Swamp Thing DVD: KID (browsing in kid's section): Look daddy! It's the Beetlejuice! I wan dis one! DAD: Are you sure? KID: Ya! (They pay for the movie and split) (AT HOME) KID: Daddy, watch the Beetlejuice with me. PLEASE!!!!! DAD: Sure! (They watch the film until they come to the closing of one scene) KEATON: Nice f***ing model (honk honk)! DAD: WHAT? ?!!!!! (THE NEXT DAY) (The dad storms into the video rental store) DAD: MY SON RENTED BEETLEJUICE LAST NIGHT WITH A FRICKING PG RATING I HEARD THE F WORD! WHO THE HECK YOU THINK YOU ARE PUTTING THIS INAPROPRIATE FRICKIN' DVD IN THE CHILDREN'S SECTION! IN FACT, I WANT IT GONE!!! AND NO MORE COPIES EVER MADE!!! OR AT LEAST A FRIGGIN' RATINGS CHANGE!!! (throws DVD across the store and storms out). It could happen.

Actually, Nightmare Before Christmas is as much of a Tim Burton movie as True Romance is a Tarantino movie.
Burton didn't only produce the Nightmare Before Christmas, he wrote it.

Yeah, but still didn't direct it and I figured he had enough movies in his filmography that he actually directed to fill all the slots. I considered it for about a minute though.

Oh, by the way, I picked Beetlejuice. But it was a tough choice. I also really enjoyed Ed Wood and Big Fish. I need to see Edward Scissorhands again, too. You also forgot Mars Attacks! I suppose that can be considered the forgotten Burton flick. Highly underrated IMHO. I love that movie.

I like Sleepy Hollow, too, but if it was a bit more gory I'd like it even better. Not enough menacing atmosphere there, in my opinion.
