Besides being one of the greatest directors of all time, Scorsese is a virtual walking encyclopedia of film history, and I love watching interviews with him. The man has so many stories and anecdotes regarding films (his own and others) that if you're a film fan, he's a complete pleasure to listen to. His enthusiasm for the medium is definitely contagious. My choice would be GOODFELLAS. One of those movies that I can watch over and over again and always be entertained. This was easily the best gangster movie since the original GODFATHER, Parts 1 & 2. It gave us yet another strong performance from Scorsese regular, Robert De Niro, and pretty much made stars out of Ray Liotta & Joe Pesci. (Anybody seen Pesci lately?? Is he officially retired?) It goes from extremes of graphic violence (Many 'whackings'!) to scenes of nervous laughter ('Whaddya mean I'm funny?'). Great soundtrack too. ;D
A few of his flicks that didn't make the poll, but might be your favorite: MEAN STREETS (1973), KING OF COMEDY (1983), THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST (1988) & THE AGE OF INNOCENCE (1993).

"Taxi Driver" - A true cinematic classic. www.beardyfreak.com/rvtaxidriver.htmOther EXCELLENT Scorsese films for me are: "Goodfellas" "Casino" "Mean Streets" "King of Comedy" Pretty good are: "Boxcar Bertha" "After Hours" "Cape Fear" Overrated is the tedius "Raging Bull", the boring "Last Temptation", "Gangs of New York" (okay...but seriously unsatisfying finale) let downs were "The Color of Money" (because of the unsatisfying ending imho) and "Bringing Out the Dead" (how could a storyline like that, teaming up with Schrader again as well...make such a bloody boring and unsatisfying movie?) Another of the Old Masters who has been in a slump recently.#nosmileys

A thread I've been waiting for!
I voted for Goodfellas: yes, it's one of those movies you can watch many times and always be involved, always hope for some unavoidable things not to happen this time round; Pesci was wonderful (it's sad he's now 'retired' and that he didn't make too many good movies after such a start), De Niro as well, and Ray Liotta blew me away with his presence in this movie... again, you'd hope for more good roles for this guy after Goodfellas (loved him in Copland, though).
The overrated Scorsese movies are The Last Temptation Of Christ and Mean Streets, in my opinion.
Bringing Out The Dead and Gangs Of New York are - strangely enough - rather powerful to me.

I had to vote for Goodfellas...one of my all time faves & also being a big mob movie fan. But I also love Taxi Driver & Casino as well. Gangs of New York was also pretty good too...

Yeah, Casino and Taxi Driver are wonderful! But Goodfellas seems to me Scorsese's most consistenly enjoyable movie - thrilling all the time, no pauses for the boring stuff (I think both Casino and Driver had some boring parts in them).
I also like Cape Fear quite a lot. When it starts I always think it's one of Martin's best things but along the way it loses the impact, unfortunately.
One Scorsese movie I don't get is After Hours: it has very good atmosphere and is enjoyably mysterious but I never feel satisfied when it ends.

Yeah, Goodfellas is a movie I never get tired of watching. Cape Fear was ok, but I've only seen it once so I guess it didn't stir anything in me to watch it again. I've never seen After Hours.

Goodfellas is my favorite. Has been for quite some time. I love the sequence where "loose" ends are being "tied up" to Layla.
Poor Marty has been robbed by the Academy!

My favorite Scorsese movie is one a lot of my friends never heard of: LIGHT SLEEPER with Willem Dafoe and Susan Sarandon. I watch it again at least once a year. Sooooo....MOODY. The film washes me into a dream almost...and made me into a Dafoe fan for sure! Though I didn't care for the actress that played his ex-girlfriend, can't remember her name. I always wish he had cast someone else in that part. Oh man, and I LOVED the hotel room Dafoe and his ex made love in (and also enjoyed the great cinematography in that room -- seeing the magnificent walls of that room made me want to be there so bad! OOOOH, and Dafoe's BUTT...now THAT is a my ideal of a perfect male butt...!!! LOL. ;D There were lots of fascinating scenes in the film. And the guy that played the villain (don't know his name either) was perfect for the part -- a villain you can just LOVE to hate...and hate a LOT...!!! The music, the lighting, the pace -- it was like an incredible dance. I guess that's why I always feel the whole film just takes me into a dream state...

Scorsese never directed "Light Sleeper". It was directed by "Taxi Driver" scribe Paul Schrader. Scorsese had nothing at all to do with it.

Taxi Driver is far superior to any film Scorcese has made. Very few movies can top the last 30 minutes of Taxi Driver.
Based on technical merits, nothing tops Kundun.
Gangs of New York was overblown and disappointing. The opening sequence with Liam Neeson was dynamite, but it had nothing left after that. I think the casting was all wrong, and without Daniel Day Lewis it would have been completely empty. Nothing more than a great display of Art Direction and Costume Design. However, thanks to Daniel Day Lewis, it rose slightly above average. Jim Broadbent and Brendan Gleeson made big contributions as well.

My vote: Goodfellas. Great flick. Great one-liners. A classic. I enjoyed Taxi Driver and it comes in a close second.

I agree about the one-liners in Goodfellas...it's probably one THE most quoted movies of all time.

Well, here's something I never thought I'd read.
From IMDB: Screen legend Robert De Niro has reunited with iconic director Martin Scorsese to work on a sequel to their classic movie Taxi Driver. The Oscar-winning actor, who starred as disturbed Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle in the 1976 film, has confirmed the movie veterans are mulling over script ideas for a follow-up to the gritty original. Apart from his comedy turn in Meet The Parents and its recent sequel Meet The Fockers, De Niro has starred in a series of flop films - and critics are hoping Travis Bickle's resurrection will restore his reputation as one of the greatest dramatic actors of all time. De Niro, 61, says, "I was talking with Martin Scorsese about doing what I guess you'd call a sequel to Taxi Driver, where he is older."
