Hmm...maybe this isn't the BEST place to ask this but is there a difference between Horror and Thriller? Or are they the same? Help! According to Noel Carroll's "Philosophy of Horror" a film has to sport a supernatural MONSTER that REPULSES the viewer in order to be labeled "horror"; most films similar in theme to horrors but with no beast would be labeled "thrillers". Hence, Jaws IS a horror because the shark there is clearly not of this world while Psycho, for instance, is a thriller. This is not a perfect definition by any means but gives you more or less a picture of the border between the two genres.

I think we're forgetting a classic people, Tremors. That deserves to be on the list more than anything from the past five years. I bet I can top it...thrice... THE MONSTER SQUAD NIGHT OF THE COMET LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH Three forgotten classics. They sure are forgotten. I've never heard of them. And are you sure that they're rated PG-13 or that's what they would be rated had they been re-released as is in today's horror market?

But I don't consider Monster Squad to really be horror. It's a kid's movie that celebrates those horror films of old--Frankenstein, Wolfman, Count Chocula.... wait... Night of the Comet is kind of like the Omega Man from the 70's with the ever wonderful Charleton Heston in charge of the post-apocalyptic world.

Do they necessarily have to be movies from the current decade? Because some of my favorite are from way back, let's see: - The little girl who lives down the lane. - Carnival of souls. (I THINK it's PG-13, didn't really bother to check them). - Veneno para las hadas AKA Poison for the fairies (Mexican horror movie, it's available on DVD in most on-line stores). - The changeling. Wasn't "The others" rated PG-13, too? I thought these were actually pretty scary, and definitely not "watered down" just because they aren't gory. The Others is the only PG-13. Weird. In here (Mexico), they are all rated "A", which means "suitable for viewers of all ages". "Let's scare Jessica to Death" is a great movie, in my opinion an excellent psychological thriller that is only one-upped by "Repulsion".

Having done a little checking, I'll change my vote to:
- SUMMER OF FEAR.
- THE OTHERS.
What does everyone else think of these movies?

If The Others was the one with Nicole Kidman, then yeah, that one wasn't all that hot. Trouble is, I can't remember it all that well, cause I keep getting it confused with the film The Other in terms of plot and action.

A more recent addition to this discussion, but I'll add The Shortcut in as well. Great fun and a lot of good stuff about it.
