BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR DEAD (2007)
Two brothers (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke), both strapped for cash, agree to rob their parent's jewelry store. The parents are elderly, the store is insured, they won't use real guns, it'll be a "victimless crime". What could go wrong? It turns out, everything. The story is told in fragments that bounce back and forth in time, not in chronological order, which is pretty cool and reveals twists and turns in the plot a little at a time. I don't want to reveal too much about the actual story beyond the set-up, so others can be as surprised as I was. The two leads are great, as well as a supporting cast that includes Marisa Tomei and Albert Finney.

IRON MAN (2008)
Action, humor, amazing effects, a good script, a great cast, especially Downey Jr in the lead role, and just a lot of fun overall. Takes it's place among the all-time great superhero movies and summer popcorn films.

Watched a lot since I have been on, but will only mention the last few......
Taken (2008)
The seventeen year old daughter of former spy Brian Mills (Liam Neeson) is abducted during a vacation in Paris by a gang of human traffickers. He heads to Paris, using his skills to find his daughter and her abductors. Nothing terribly original, but a likable cast and some damn fine fight sequences. A more than solid action thriller.
8/10
Max Payne (2009)
NYPD detective Max Payne is still obsessed with finding the one who got away, the man who killed his wife and child. It has destroyed his career and his friendships, and when a woman is found brutally murdered outside his place, with his wallet on her, he is drawn into the investigation....as a suspect. He starts to investigate on his own, and discovers the girl is linked to a new, highly addictive drug that causes intense hallucinations....and he also uncovers a connection to the deaths of his own family. I thought I was going to hate this (I did hate the first few minutes). But I actually started to enjoy it a bit after awhile, the characters are mostly bland, but it had a nice look and I liked Mark Wahlberg as the title character. It was, however, very predictable. And I have never played the games, so I have nothing to compare it to.

Doubt (2008)
Set in 1964 at a Catholic school in the Bronx, a likable priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is trying to bring change to the strict rules of the school, much to the dismay of the principal, Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) who rules the school with an iron fist. She begins to grow suspicious of the priest's attention toward the school's first black student, Donald Miller, and believes (no, she is CERTAIN) that the man is making sexual advances toward the boy. Caught in the middle is Sister James, a young nun who has suspicions of her own, but comes to have doubts about the man's guilt. A battle of wills ensues. Outstanding cast, for sure, and some absolutely powerful dialogue. And I am not sure I have seen a better scene recently then the one between Viola Davis (playing Donald's mother) and Streep. Not all of the film is as good as that, but there are several scenes that come close. Though, I have to admit, at times, Streep did seem to be a bit of a caricature.
8.5/10
Grindstone Road (2008)
A woman, traumatized after a car accident that left her son in a coma, and her husband decide to purchase an old house in her hometown to try to move on with their lives. But the ghost of a missing child is haunting her, and she starts to investigate his disappearance. By the time anything interesting happened, I just didn't care anymore. Drags on and on, and nothing particularly scary happens. I pretty much just wanted it to be over.
3/10
Beneath Still Waters (2005)
Story begins in 1965, Spain....two boys explore a deserted town that is about to be completely flooded to stop satanist Mordecai Salas and his followers. The boys release Salas, one is killed but the other escapes. Forty years later, Salas is back and the evil threatens to rise once again. More than a little goofy and some of the effects are terrible. Not a total waste though, the story does have a cool Lovecraftian feel some of the time, and there are a couple of death scenes that are pretty well done. Too bad its such an uneven mess. But its still fairly entertaining for what it is.
4/10
Rest Stop: Don't Look Back (2008)
Corporal Tom Hilts takes a ten day leave to return home to Texas to investigate the disappearance of his little brother Jesse a year before. So he heads to California with girlfriend, Marilyn and another friend of his, following the same route as Jesse and his girlfriend. They end up at the same rest stop of the previous film and are attacked by a mysterious man in a yellow truck.
Ah, here is a guilty pleasure of mine. I KNOW they aren't good movies, but I still like them. Yes, I even enjoyed this one. The supernatural element, while not always well done, is interesting. And I just love the creepy family in the RV. But where the first one actually had a good, creepy atmosphere off and on that kind of balanced out the bad acting and stupid actions of the main character.....this one didn't really have that going for it. Characters were still stupid, and yes, it was still a bit of an incoherent mess (that was the probably the biggest flaw of the first one, yet also was one of the reasons that I liked it...go figure) And yet... both movies kind of go into the "not great, but hey, for some reason I had a good time" category of movie for me.

Yesterday I saw Dolan's Cadillac (2009) based on one of the better stories by Stephen King, obviously. The movie is alright, though not quite as tense and emotional as the original. I liked Christian Slater as the villain, but Wes Bentley... man, I have to say I just don't get his acting style, he seems to be so INHUMAN in every role he plays... It worked fine for his weirdo character in American Beauty, sure, but it doesn't work at all here.
