Question: Are you supposed to not know who the moles are? Is that why the preview gives it away? No, the movie's very upfront about what Damon & Dicaprio are doing. Thanks. ;D I wasn't going to consider seeing this but after the rave reviews I'm going to try to see it this weekend.

Phoenix the preview is a bad idea because it shows you somethings you don't need to see. Infact I'd go as far to say, it may be one of the worst trailers I've seen. (In that respect)

(In that respect) But hey - MOST trailers suck this way! They just focus on showing you the coolest parts of the film with no regards for how much they spoil the surprises, and then expect you to forget what you saw. And truth be told - most viewers forget the trailers right away and just remember that "Hell, this is a film to watch". I envy them 'cause I never forget a goddamn spoiler. And it looks like most members of The Board don't, either. And The Departed? One of the finest Scorsese films ever, though I agree with Heineken that it's no perfection - but very nearly so. The best movie I saw at the theatre this year so far: gripping, with top-notch acting (DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Baldwin, Sheen, WAHLBERG!!! - I agree with all that has been said about him in this thread), lots of surprises, crispy dialogues and great soundtrack. 9/10

I can't really add much more than what everyone else has already said...great suspense, great atmosphere & photography, a lot of "OH SH*T moments, and an excellent cast as with any Scorsese film. When I was reading back through the posts in this thread several had commented that Mark Wahlberg probably wouldn't get the recognition he deserved for his role, but didn't he end up being the only one of the cast that was nominated for an Oscar? Like some of you have stated, I have to agree, not the perfection of Goodfellas, but darn close.

Yea, I finally saw this a couple of weeks ago too. It was not my favorite movie of last year because (like Heineken said) when you end up comparing it to the perfection that is Goodfellas it falls a bit short. Plus, I was never particularly surprised (probably because I saw it so late).
Something that is just a problem for me, and this is totally my hang up and my own shallowness, are those boston accents. I've always disliked them and at times when Matt Damon is talking I kind of laughed. It just doesn't sound right to me.
Still, I can see where people loved this movie. I just can't say I did.

Funny that you picked Damon specifically to comment on his accent as he, as well as Wahlberg, are actually from Boston. Theirs should probably be the most authentic sounding Boston accents in the film.

I guess just hearing Damon without the Boston accent in a movie like Bourne Identity, that it was hard for me to get over. Again, the accent thing is totally my own biased hang-up. I just do NOT like those accents, authentic or not. It's probably because they were so authentic!

This has nothing to do w/ the movie...but speaking of accents, I hate it when people do bad fake Southern accents in movies. That just drives me crazy! I'm like, We DO NOT sound like that... or maybe we do... ;D That's just one of my pet peeves...

Ever since I found out I had a free preview of HBO and Cinemax a week ago and found out that this one was going to be aired during that time, I wanted to, in secret, use this as the center-piece for this month's viewing, as it was going to be the perfect test for me to finally step outside the norm and see something I would never in my life look at another way outside of doing it for this Movie Genre of the Month. I just have to say, damn was I impressed.
Now, first off, the running time did make this thing a chore for me. Me and my 90 minute home was severely tested during this 140 minute trip, mainly through some useless and entirely unnecessary scenes as the couple at their home moving in together or the beginning, which tempted me to turn it off since I couldn't get myself interested in what was going on.
When it got about forty minutes in, and all the allegiences start getting close to being exposed, it became a lot more entertaining and I actually put the remote down, a sign that I wanted to see more. The conversations between Jack and Leo were a big part of that, since usually it's action that makes me entertained, but here, this one kept me from how the secrets were going to stay hidden. As it goes along, I stayed into it for this reason, and when it finally gets going and Leo finds out that others know of his true identity outside of his boss, is when I found myself really enjoying this one. From the switch-and-bait in the abandoned apartment buildings that kills off someone I didn't expect to a full-on shoot-out in the warehouse, it really left me feeling entertained and I was actually enjoying it.
Then comes the final ten minutes, and it's one of the best I've ever seen. Surprise after surprise, some I was never expecting and a couple that did seem obvious for the sake of having a twist, but all nicely done and really got me. I was a little surprised that the moment the treachery was discovered in the station house nothing was done, but that means all the fun afterward can happen so I'm fine with it.
All-in-all, I have to say that it was much better than I thought it would, and was certainly something I would never really think of owning. I'm feeling generous with this, and I'll go with what I think it deserves. 10/10

I'll certainly be the lookout for it, I just want to do what I did with this one and get it uncensored, as I've noticed it appearing on A&E and AMC a lot, not something I want when exposed to something like this, with it's violence and mean-ness, for the first time. If it comes on Starz or Encore or something like that, I'll definitely give it a shot.
