You know, if you keep this up, I just may have to watch AvP to see what it's really about.

If you do, don't pay to see it. My Mom is a Librarian (the one in charge) and she's the one that buys new DVD's for their stock. I told her to buy AVP with City money for the Library so I wouldn't have to waste money on it. So small-town taxpayers paid for me to see that crapfest! (maniacally) Ha ha ha!!!

Yeah, as Q said on two occasions, I was referred to this great board via him, and I absolutely love it here. And he's also right on the second issue that I have time to spend here even after being the biggest movie star in the world and fighting Shao Kahn's interdimentional invasion Seriously, though, I love the MK movie, thus my name here. Too bad the sequel sucked after the first five minutes were over. But that's another topic altogether. I was a fan of the MK movie, too. Hell, I was a pretty big MK fan back in the heyday of the SNES. I got to open MKII for my SNES on Christmas Eve. My brother and I spent Christmas mutilating people and lovin' every minute of it. Jax was my favorite on that one. If only Midway had made use of the damn control stick for MK:Deadly Alliance (and more fatalities) I probably wouldn't have grown so tired of it so easily. The GameCube's damn tiny D-Pad just wasn't meant for fighting games. And I totally agree about Mortal Kombat... what was it? Annhilation? God what a lurid piece of shit. As bad as AVP. To me, Paul Anderson made a decent Mortal Kombat film and the excellent Event Horizon, then flushed his talent right down to the bowels of hell so no one would ever see it again. I wish I hadn't bought the Resident Evil movie. I could've spent that 10 bucks on something good. Like Ghoulies I & II...

What a debate! Let's continue Johny cage 10 is character-driven Slayrrr is an action oriented, but you guys missed the 3rd dimension which is a vital part of a movie. It's the atmosphere, the background, the suspense! Mr and Mrs Smith, Mortal Kombat, AvP, Cellular - pure action no other elements; In the Cut - almost pure atmosphere there is bloody action there but it seems side issue, Out of Africa Predator- atmosphere + action; Woody Allen and Kevin Smith's flicks - character + atmosphere Alien, Aliens, Enemy Mine - whole 3 dimensions I don't claim these films don't have other elements but that they rely mostly on those ingredients mentioned by me. Lots of explosions, deaths, and gunfire, I love it! So loud, so cool, too me, nothing can top it. You're a lucky man, almost all Hollywood big-production flicks made contemporarily are addressed to you. ;D

To tell the truth, I haven't seen an action flick in the theaters since Lethal Weapon 4. But I do have the two Rush Hours, "The One," "The Transporter," and "Terminator 3," which have been released after that.

Dude, you didn't see Unleashed? Now that's a cool action film. Jet Li rules.
And Spacer mentions one of the things I look for the most in films, horror fanatic that I am: Atmosphere. That's why Evil Dead is so high on my "greatest films & favorites" lists (which are stored mentally)--it has the most perfect atmosphere of pretty much any horror film out there. It's absolutely incredible. It's also why I place Frailty so high--and that's another movie with everything. Characters, some action, and thick, thick atmosphere--the great story and acting are also a plus!
So: Johnny Cage is all about the characters. Slayrrr is all about the action. I'm all about the atmosphere.
I guess that could be the main driving force behind my preference of Predator over Pred2--Pred1's atmosphere is thicker, and more akin to a horror film. Pred2 is set up more like a gory action film. I love the gore, but prefer the horror.

I missed it at the theaters. I wanted to, because I love Jet Li a lot, but I never got around to it. I know I got it for Christmas from a friend, so I'm very anxious about seeing it. But no, I don't have it yet.

I initially missed it (Unleashed) at theaters, too. But then by some miracle, the wife and I found it playing at a cheap theater some time after it's standard theatrical run. Cost us $2.00 each. The first 15 minutes are kind of clumsy, and there's a rather cheesy "underground fight club" kinda thing at one point, but pretty damn good overall.

Well, like I said, I'm getting it, just have to wait until Christmas to get it, because I told a friend of mine to get it for me and I would get him The Man with No Name trilogy in return, so it's a nice little system the two of us have. I get a great action film, he gets three films from his favorite actor. I probably should ask for two more films just to even out the score.

Yo, Slayrrrr. Agree 100% with the advice given here. Even as a big fan of the Alien and Predator universes, you should only see the trauma that is AvP if you don't pay money for it. That is what I did myself, without telling you the means that allowed it to happen, and it's something I'm proud of. I would hate to have that garbage of a film get even a dollar from me. Special effects are nice, as one would expect from a $60 million film, but that's the end of the positives. The writing, characterization and continuity are terrible, as it's obvious that Anderson only got a casual look at the Alien and Predator storylines and then created a shallow resemblance of those two universes. But hey, as an Alien and Predator fan, I understand that one will need to see it for completion's sake. Just keep in mind that this piece of s**t is NOT a sequel to either movie franchise, and it's not official, as far as I'm concerned. I prefer my Predators un-neutered and my humans smart, thank you, Mr Anderson. Also, Quorthon, you touched on a topic that I'm very big on, which is the Mortal Kombat universe. In fact, I'm even bigger on MK than on AvP. So I wanna start a new thread discussing this other, very important film and video game topic. Hopefully it'll be as interesting as this is proving to be

Yeah, I checked my HBO schedule and it's on Friday at 5:00 my time, so maybe Saturday I'll have some insight into AvP, as well as the Masters of Horror thread that no one has replied or even looked at since I did the Argento episode write-up. For shame! It still must be said that I really love both films in the series, and while the opening scene in P2 is probably one of my favorite scenes in movie history, the jungle shoot-out in the first one is so great that it moves slightly above this one. But in my mind, I always thought this one was way too underrated and thought it was a worthy sequel to the first one.
