As is typical with pretty much every Burton movie, I loved the visuals! The characters and the production design look just amazing.
All of the voice work is great, with extra points going to Johnny Depp as Victor, Helena Bonham Carter as the Corpse Bride and Christopher Lee as the Pastor.
Depp continues to prove that he is bar none, one of the best actors working today. Even when it's just his voice we're hearing. And it's nice to see yet another collaboration between Depp and Burton. They're becoming the modern day Scorsese and DeNiro.
And it is nice to see Christopher Lee getting so much work in so many high profile films, so late in life. The man has literally had a career rebirth in recent years and now has a whole new generation of fans. That's pretty cool.
On to the movie. The story was pretty good, but nothing very original or earth shattering. Alas, that is also something that is typical of most of Burton's movies. Not too many of his movies knock me out story-wise. It's almost always with the visuals that he impresses me.
Basically, even though Victor is already engaged, he "accidentally" proposes to a dead woman and he spends most of the film trying to get out of this twisted marriage. That's pretty much the whole story.
Another thing that disappointed were the songs.
Unlike Burton's other animated feature, NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, none of the songs here are memorable. Burton shouldn't be afraid to go to someone other than Danny Elfman.
Burton is good at creating these dark, gothic, fairy tales and he's got the visual flair to show us something interesting and entertaining. I just wish there had been a little more story to chew on.
And before anyone says, "It's just a kid's movie. Why should the story be any deeper?" I have one word for you: PIXAR.
The geniuses at PIXAR have raised the bar very high on animated films. They have shown time and time again, that it is possible to create an animated film, with a good, layered story, and characters that seem more alive than in your typical live action film.
What does Burton do different from PIXAR? His animated movies have a very distinctive look. They scream, "TIM BURTON!". You can definitely tell that this and NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS are from the same artist.
We'll probably still get the DVD when it's released because dammit, it's great eye candy!
