Some more interesting casting news:
Ryder To Play Spock's Mother
Hollywood actress Winona Ryder has signed up to star in the new Star Trek movie - as the mother of Mr. Spock. The Heathers star will join Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, British funnyman Simon Pegg as Scotty and Heroes actor Zachary Quinto as Spock for the 11th big screen outing of the cult TV show. It remains to be seen if Ryder will be playing the Vulcan mother of Spock, as initially reported by Variety. According to Star Trek lore, Spock's mother was human, played by Jane Wyatt in the original series and in one of the feature films. Directed by JJ Abrams, the film will focus on the early journey of the original Enterprise crew and is due for release in December next year.

Now that's an odd choice...
Is someone really thinking of making her Vulcan?? Wouldn't that piss off the fans!

That could've just been a screw-up by someone at Variety who didn't do the research and just assumed that Spock's mom is Vulcan like him.

Saw the new movie recently and was fairly entertained. Fine acting and fine f/x but... you see... I wasn't blown away by it, no...

It wasn't a homerun, but I thought it was a damn entertaining summer popcorn flick though. Definitely more story and character development than the typical modern summer movie. I enjoyed it enough to give it a 8.5/10.

It gets 7/10 from me.
And hey - I love Simon Pegg but didn't anyone else think he seemed a bit out of place in this movie?

I don't know if I'd say he seemed "out of place". He was clearly brought in to provide some comedy relief, and in that, I think he and the writers succeeded. The thing that kind of bugged me about his character was that, it seemed like they tried to cast younger actors who matched up physically with the original cast members, but in the case of Pegg, and to a lesser extent, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, they threw that out the window. Other than the voice, Pegg doesn't resemble the young James "Scotty" Doohan at all.
